Ruth Pitts of Lansdowne writes of her visit to Hershey Pennsylvania praising the four-lane turnpike highways, smooth travel, and lack of traffic lights. She notes scenic mountains and neat farms as she enters the town, inviting other American families to plan a short trip.
Hershey safety patrols from Derry Two and St. Joan of Arc schools tour Gettysburg Saturday as the Hershey Optimist Club honors a year of service. Two buses depart at 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. for museum and battlefield visits directed by Russ Catshall.
Members of Hershey Post American Legion partner with Holy Trinity Lutheran Spring Creek Church of the Brethren First EUB Church St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church and Derry Presbyterian Church to sell two flag sizes at 6 and 11 dollars. Boy Scouts canvass residents to fund troop programs with profits divided among the listed churches. Co chairs include Edwin C Miller deputy commander of the 19th District and Michael Morris.
Two Hershey Junior College students won Franklin and Marshall College scholarships worth 950 dollars each. William Nycom Hershey and A Russell Shurig earned the awards for scholarship character and ability. Nycom Hershey, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Hershey, will study pre medical subjects and is active in the college chorus and science circles. Shurig, Milton Hershey School graduate, will major in mathematics and has been named to the Dean's Scholarship list for two years.
Boy Scouts plan a paper drive in Hershey starting at 4 p.m. Monday. Residents should place papers and rags at the curb for collection.
The Hershey Women's Club plans a bake sale to benefit the Water Ballet. It will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the club game room.
Up to 400 Milton Hershey School students take part in Parents Week-End activities organized by the student senate. Open houses at the cottage units Main Farm Home and at Milton Hershey High School begin 6:30 p.m. with events including Around the Campfire at 2 p.m. a musical revue Sing Neighbor at 8 p.m. in the auditorium and an 80 exhibit hobby show. A Mothers Day service Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Community Theater. balcony for parents. Transportation provided from the Community Inn.
The fourth annual VFW Teener Baseball Tourney will be held August 20 to 24 at Hershey Stadium practice field. Joseph D. Owens announces the event with Hershey Estates providing housing and meals for participants. A kick off dinner at Hershey Community Club starts events on Monday.
Clarence T. Webb Jr son of Mr and Mrs Clarence T Webb Sr of Hershey RD 1 has enlisted in the United States Army Webb attended Derry Township High School.
Hershey area high school performers achieved strong showings at the Pennsylvania Forensic and Music League contest in Pittsburgh. Derry Township High School earned multiple high ratings with Arthur Mentzer lead in declamation and several ensembles earning excellent to superior honors including a superior band rating for Mentzer and a superior string ensemble mark the seventh time in nine years top-rated.
VFW Commander Larry Wallace announced appointive officers for the post. Adjutant Joseph Sopko and others named include officer of the day Paul Hetrick Jr patriotic instructor William Schmehl legislative officer Clarence Jefferies guard John Biogi post historian Robert Heagy and trustee Paul Hetrick Jr for two years. The post plans Buddy Poppy sales with the Ladies Auxiliary on May 25 and welcomes new members Robert Miller and Wallace Briel.
