Army composer Mays wins Sousa Award and prize
Master Sergeant Earl R. Mays, son of Mrs. E. R. Mays of 103 East Caracas Avenue, won the $1000 Army prize in the ASCAP John Philip Sousa Award contest for his march The Army Field Forces March. A Hershey native, he directs music for the Army Field Band at Fort Meade after serving in Derry Township schools and West Chester teachers college.

Polio Drive Raises Over Two Thousand in Derry Township
The Hershey Memorial Post and Auxiliary report nearly 2 096 dollars raised in the 1954 March of Dimes drive in Derry Township. Donations came from Friday Mothers March 783 20 the theatre fund 519 90 test tube boxes 563 37 Hershey Chocolate 150 and coin cards 80 to date. Committee head Larry Wallace thanked residents for generous support and noted help from Boy Scouts schools police and local businesses.

Poorman Elected Supervisor for Dauphin County Institution District
Leo R. Poorman of 86 Derry Road Hershey is elected by Dauphin County Commissioners to fill the late Edward Habbyshaw’s post as supervisor of the County Institution District. Poorman, a former county prothonotary (1938-1950), has worked since then for Aircraft Marine Products Inc. in Harrisburg.

Six Chilean union leaders visiting the United States for three months toured the Hershey Chocolate Corporation plant and Hershey Estates divisions. They met with Local 464 Bakery and Confectionery Workers and the Pennsylvania Federation of Labor, observing American industry, workers home life, and educational facilities.
