Optimists Spur Bicycle Safety With Program
The Optimist Club of Hershey hosted the first annual Bike Safety Program on School Plaza drawing hundreds of families. About 400 bikes received Scotch-Lite safety emblems and each rider got a 1955 membership card linked to the emblem. Eight year old Karen Guyer won an English bicycle in a drawing among participants as films on bicycle safety played at the Community Building Little Theatre. State Police, led by Major Thomas F. Martin, aided the event with police involvement and training school support.

Airman Drescher Promoted at Greenville AFB
Louis E. Drescher son of Mr and Mrs Nelson Thom as Drescher of 107 West Governor Road has been promoted to Airman Second Class at Greenville Air Force Base in Mississippi. A Hershey High School graduate he was previously stationed at Amarillo AFB in Texas and has served ten months.

Police Protection For School Children In Hershey Estates
The Hershey Estates will provide extra police protection for children traveling to and from school. C. W. Miller will be stationed at Chocolate and Ceylon Avenues at 3 pm dismissal peak. Earl Kohr will guard Chocolate and Cocoa Avenues each morning and afternoon, aiding student patrols. The service is free to the school district.

Polio Vaccine Hailed by Most Parents in Derry Township
Parents in Derry Township approved the Salk polio vaccine for 355 of 381 First and Second Graders, with few objections. Vaccinations will occur in public schools under Dr. W D Stettler and nurse Elizabeth Goodwill, with additional parochial and Hershey School students eligible. Booster shots are planned for next Fall to complete immunization.

Tulip Festival Opens at Hershey Gardens April 23
Hershey Gardens announces its annual Tulip Festival opening April 23 in the 21 acre site. Horticultural director H. L. Erdman notes tulips will reach peak bloom around April 30 and continue into the following week as warm weather persists. Garden hours are daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
