Starved Rock Crumbling Away as River Erodes Historic Site
The Starved Rock, near Utica along the Illinois River, is slowly crumbling due to sandstone erosion. Once 145 feet high, the rock has diminished as floodwaters and a cyclone damaged its surface and surrounding pines. Legends tie it to Illinois Indians, Fort St. Louis, Father Marquette, Tonti, and La Salle, yet its future as a beauty spot looks bleak though its history remains immortal.
