Celebration Honors Schumacher on Completion 25 Years As a Priest

The Reverend Father Laur C Schumacher marked twenty five years as a priest with a solemn high mass at St. Mary’s at 10 am on a Sunday. A benediction followed as relatives and parishioners filled the church, with altar decor including hyacinths and red roses. Clergy from nearby parishes assisted, and a reception in the school cafeteria concluded the occasion with thanks to those who contributed.

Harry J Bishop 75 Magnolia Resident Dies

Harry J Bishop aged 75 lifelong Magnolia resident died suddenly Monday at his home from a heart attack. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the family home with Rev G D Landes of the Magnolia Methodist church presiding. Born January 1, 1880, he was the son of Andrew Jackson and Fannie Coe Bishop. He married Elizabeth Klein on February 4, 1914, and they had two children. Surviving are his wife, daughter Verna Ernes Rofnd of Henry, son Harry Jean Bishop of Park Forest, four grandchildren, and a sister Lena Allen of Peoria.

Marshall County Builds Dog Pound At Airport Site

Marshall county contracts with Jerry Barnes Washburn and Lacon to construct a dog pound on the southwest corner of the county airport east of Lacon. The 24 by 60 foot concrete walled facility will have four pens and is set for completion around July 15 with James Shirley named pound master to begin seizing stray dogs and impounded animals under law.

Pheasant Chick Distribution To Marshall Putnam Clubs

Gerald Strong reports five sportsmen’s clubs in Marshall and Putnam counties received pheasant chicks from the State Conservation Department. Marshall County Sportsmen’s Club at Lacon got 2,600. Putnam County at Hennepin 7,600. Idolu ca and Varna clubs 600 each. Camp Grove club received several thousand with exact numbers pending. Birds will be raised in 250-bird units and released from open pens at 10 to 12 weeks, aided by 7 ft fences and pens enabling return for feed. State supplies chicks and half the feed. clubs cover the rest and brooder costs.

Fourth of July Celebration Notes

Fourth of July plans introduce two new ideas using United States Savings bonds instead of merchandise prizes and home talent acts. Vince Cofoid leads Hen ry Post 23 American Legion organizing the event, supported by capable aides. Leo Smith heads the boat rheus committee, tackling water level issues after a dock relocation. Ralph Brown chairs the fireworks committee facing weather challenges for displays on the river’s east bank.

Sunday Community Events on the Illinois River

At 1 30 p m motor boat races on the Illinois River sponsored by the Illini Stock Boat Racing Assn of Chillicothe with admission 50 cents and free for children under 15. At 7 30 p m free acts on the Central Park bandstand. At 9 p m a street dance on Edward Street featuring music by Raymond Pozzi of Toluca.

July 4 Holiday Activities in Central Park and Town

A community celebration features a 1:30 pm decorated bicycle and tricycle parade in Central Park hosted by Van Deveer's Food Center with prizes. At 2:30 pm Norman Stehl leads a 40 piece accordion concert on the band stand. 6:30 pm Little League game at Henry Grade school diamond, then an all day waterfront display along Kinvis River. Evening draws include a $875 bond drawing, Wilson Shows carnival and rides, and Legion post sponsorship.

Henry Post 323 presents a three day Independence Day program July 2 3 4 in Central Park Henry Wilsons Famous Shows and Earl Bunting Enterprises sponsor events with the American Legion coordinating a Sunday church service and a Monday bicycle parade. Highlights include boat races on the Hinds River, free acts on the bandstand, a street dance on Edward Street and a large fireworks display at dark. Expect 30 Entries In Motor Boat Races Here Sunday

Gerald Strong of Lacon, commodore of the Illini Stock Boat Racing association of Chillicothe, announces plans for motor boat races on the Illinois River next Sunday July 3 with an expected 30 or more racers. Ten heats feature five races, each heat four laps, all visible from Waterworks park. Prizes awarded to top five in each race, with points 500 for first down to 100 for fifth. New D-1 class includes large inboard hydros. a sixth class may be added. Third consecutive year of races for Fourth of July, with Old Settlers Day also on the schedule.

Midwestern Playboys to Furnish Music for Businessmen Dance

Lee Poff and the Midwestern Playboys will furnish music for a street dance after the weekly drawing program. Sponsored by the Henry Businessmen Association and the American Legion Fourth of July celebration, the event will be at the Henry Theatre on Edward Street following the drawing. Members include Russell and the Poll, Ler sings and plays guitar, Darnie Vore, Don Bryant, Fryin Rowton, and Ray Brady. The dance area is roped off from Strawberry Lane to the Henry State Bank corner.
