Lee Wright is appointed acting postmaster and will take charge Friday morning. The Senate confirmed the appointment after a formal recommendation by Senator William H. Dieterich to President Roosevelt. Wright, active in local Democratic circles, has worked with Chicago’s Sanitary District and Chillicothe valley engineers, succeeding retiring postmaster Adam P. Brown who served for years.

Dennis McEvoy Dies at Home in Chillicothe
Dennis McEvoy 70 died at 7 o'clock Tuesday morning after a stroke earlier in the day. He spent decades with the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway as station agent in Putnam and Killicothe and was a longtime Chillicothe Kiwanis member. Funeral at St Edward's Church used a Chillicothe to Putnam procession, with interment in Putnam Cemetery. He was born in Geneseo and survived by his widow and three sons and two daughters.

Henry Mattern and Ernest Gray depart Monday for Roundup Montana to visit Mattern's sister and family. They traveled as far as Cheyenne Wyoming with Mr and Mrs Carol Bodeen who have been visiting here. The return trip will be arranged by the same method and next month will be negotiated similarly. Mattern works as an inter with the News-Republican and Gray resides with his parents west of town.

P Turner of Pekin, president of Turner Hudnut Grain Company, died last Saturday at his Pekin home at age 79 after a period of good health. Funeral services were held Monday at his Pekin residence with burial in the local cemetery. Survivors include his wife and four children Mrs C H Mead of Chillicothe, Robert Turner of Peoria, and Vincent and Mary Ellen of Pekin.

May Have Ferry Over Illinois River at Henry
Henry business delegates met with state highway officials in Springfield and learned a ferry could be rushed through. Engineer J E Raffensperger travels to Ottawa to study barge costs while figures for a complete ferry outfit are obtained. Officials expect federal public works funds by July 1 to finance a bridge, enabling construction to begin soon after.

Pekin Bank Hold Up Victim Identifies Suspect
Henry Hofer Jr a Pekin bank employee and victim in a daylight hold up last Friday escaped with about 10000 in cash and registered mail. Hofer and Emil Pask were returning from the post office when three bandits ambushed them at the county courthouse steps. Pask drew a gun but was overpowered. Hofer handed over the mail while the thieves fled in a car. The next day both men identified a bandit from photos at a Springfield gallery. Police continue to investigate.

Prominent Granville Man Dies at 61
John H. Buhn, 61, a prominent Granville farmer, died Saturday evening from heart trouble. He recently resigned as highway commissioner, served 18 years on the Hopkins board of education, and was vice president of the First National Bank of Granville. His wife died last November from heart trouble. Surviving: son Egii of Granville, son Fred G. of Princeton, and daughter Mrs. Melinda Markman at home.

Cigarettes Stolen From Sparland Shops
Thieves entered the pool room and barber shop of Frisbey and Nichols in Sparland last Wednesday night and stole between thirty five and forty cartons of cigarettes. Entrance was made by removing plate glass from the door. The previous night an entrance was made through a transom and a number of cigarettes were taken.

Two Burned by Hot Tar Near McNabb
Clarence Peterson and Orville Acuncius are recovering from severe burns to their arms after a kettle of hot tar they were loading onto a truck for use on the state highway dropped. Acuncius also burned on the feet and Peterson had a burn on his face. The accident occurred at McNabb on Saturday.

Three Peru youths fined over assault on Ed ward Johnson
Fred Thieman Wilbur Ruppert and Elmer Rose were fined 50 dollars and costs each by Justice Frank Henn of Granville for assaulting Ed ward Johnson of Hennepin. The youths, jailed in Hennepin county jail, were accused of beating Johnson after a dispute over timbers tied in the Illinois river at Peru. The alleged incident occurred the prior Tuesday night.

Youth Drowns in Crow Creek near Lacon
Kenneth Buck an 18 year old of Lacon drowned at 9 30 p m Thursday night while bathing in Crow creek near Wilbern eight miles southeast of Lacon. He waded into the middle of the creek and stepped off into a deep hole. Companions Ralph Buck 15 and Robert Waldo 18 rushed for help and the body was recovered from the creek bottom by Mr McDow the station agent.

Volunteers Aid Sparland Farmer in Quenching Fire
A Saturday morning blaze started from burning cobs at James Burnett’s Sparland area farm in La Prairie township. Volunteers and neighbors battled the flames that destroyed the hog house and two hogs, damaged a corn crib, and burned a $300 corn dump while preventing spread to the barn and other structures. The farm is owned by Thomas and Henry Burnett with James Burnett operating for them.
