County Board Approves Airport Land Purchase Near Lasse

The county board voted to buy 140 acres of farm land east of the Lasse airport site from the Ranger Farm, paying a down payment with the remainder to follow. Frey Plans New Plane Operation at Peoria Municipal Field

Ordination of Rev William K Gray at Peoria Cathedral

The Rev William K Gray son of Mr and Mrs William Gray of LaPrairie Township was ordained to the priesthood at St Marys Cathedral Peoria on Trinity Sunday. Bishop J H Schlarman presided. Gray, born November 28 1921 in La Prairie, sang his first solemn mass at St Patricks Camp Grove and received congratulations from relatives and clergy at a reception at the LaPrairie home.

Henry pupil visits Capitol. Lannon letter to Jackie Copple

An eighth grade group from Henry Grade School visited the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield on May 7. Representative James P Lannon wrote to Jackie Copple praising the trip, inviting the group to return during session and wishing Jackie success, adding a personal note about his illness.

Brother of Sarah Barnes Dies At Rolfe Iowa

Hugh C Barnes of Rolfe Iowa died May 22 age 68 10 23. Funeral held May 26 at St Margarets Rolfe with Rev Fr D W Twell presiding. Survived by wife three children Hubert George Elbert and Herbert V French and three grandchildren sister Sarah Barnes of Henry and nephews James Barnes Los Angeles Lee Barnes Bradford. Lee Barnes attended services.

Truman To Speak At Safety Conference Opening Session

President Truman will address the opening session of the Action Program Group at the President's Highway Safety Conference. The event runs June 1, 19, and 20 in the Interior Department Auditorium, Washington DC, with officials from 4 states and the District of Columbia and many highway safety groups. The goal is to save at least 10,000 lives in 1947.

Legion Dedicates New Henry Building on Second Street

The American Legion Post 323 and Ladies Auxiliary joint that community project held a Wednesday evening dedication for the newly acquired Henry Legion building on Second Street. Commander E Brennan led the ceremony stressing justice freedom and democracy as guiding ideals. A bingo game and door prizes followed the formal event with participation from Veterans of Foreign Wars and local veterans.

Henry Firemen Attend Firemen's College at U of I

Six members of the Henry Fire Department attended the 26th annual fire college at the University of Illinois on Tuesday in Champaign. Chief Walter B Duke Ed Rickey Roy Hurd Rollie Smith Bryan Williams and John Morgensen joined talks by state and Chicago officials and training in pumpers towers masks and oxygen apparatus. The department plans a local training program to share what was learned and has long benefited from participating in the fire college.

Henry Swimming Pool Set to Open Sunday June 15

The Henry municipal pool will open Sunday June 15 per Mayor L. F Klein's announcement. Cold weather delayed the start since Memorial Day, and a Wood's lamp ringworm test certificate is required for all children 14 and under. The pool drains Sunday nights and closes Mondays. Louis Hank returns as supervisor and Richard Wunder serves as lifeguard.

Funeral Services Friday For Former Sparland Resident

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday June 13 at Sparland Methodist Church for Thomas Nighsonger formerly of Sparland. He died Sunday June 8 in Fulton Kansas of a heart attack. He is a brother of Mrs. Gus Hawksworth and uncle of Clyde Hawksworth of Henry. Surviving also include a sister Mrs Lois Toe of Peoria and six children. A complete obituary will be published in the Henry News Republican next week.

Minerva Harris obituary from Whitefield pioneer resident

Mrs Minerva I Harris 83 died suddenly June 4 1947 at her Whitefield Iowa home. Born February 24 1864 Promise City she was the last of eleven children of Richard and Mary Anderson. She married Thomas M Harris February 18 1882 and lived on a farm near Whitefield later retiring there after his 1941 death. Surviving: sons Joseph Hulbert Willis George Clyde. daughters Julia Hogate Mary Roach Eva Millard Mabel Bornsheler. grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral at Milo Methodist Church June 5 officiated by Rev Albert F Van Cloy with interment at Stovd's Grove Cemetery.

Rutland Twirlers Featured At Henry Band Concert

Mary Kay Cleary and Alma Beth Tope state winners in baton twirling will perform at Henry School Band in Central Park next Wednesday evening at 8:44. The concert marks the second in a summer series under Arthur Blocher Roth. The twirlers, praised for flawless state contest scores, are invited to play at Vandercook School of Music in Chicago. Watch Found At Champaign Traced To Accident Victim

Mrs L J Hager found a white gold Bu lo va wrist watch in Champaign and placed an ad. The finder’s note was sent to Mrs Anna Crabtree of Peru, mother of Barbara Crabtree killed in a car crash near Henry on Route 29 in early June 1947. A lawyer, Francis T Duncan, requests contact if the watch matches the bracelet ink or sighting near the accident.

Henry Firemen Demonstrate New “Deadman” Equipment

Henry firemen showcased a new apparatus named deadman to hold a nozzle with a non heavy stream, enabling one person to direct water in narrow spaces. Built by Ed Rickey and donated by Duke Brothers, it uses three prongs fixed into ground to stabilize the hose.

Chicago Motor Club Promotes Driver Training in Schools

Thirty five teachers in Illinois and Indiana high schools received certificates in driver education from Northwestern University Traffic Institute at the Orrington Hotel Evanston. Chicago Motor Club president Charles M Hayes said driver training halves high school student accidents. The club aims to install courses in 100 high schools by September 1917, with car lending by dealers to participating schools and dual control cars provided.

George Ryan Dies in California
