A Putnam public health committee meeting on May 7 at 8 p.m. in the Marshall Bureau building discussed next year’s program, TB control funds, and the Wood lamp for detections. Attendees included Mrs. Ww: Bi, Dr B. Quayler, A. O. Birgerson, and others, with plans to reconvene after a later gathering.
On May 23 a constructive gathering brought natives from multiple religious groups to Post 823 Legion hall. The meeting opened with remarks on the Child Welfare Program and distributed folders. City officials urged parental involvement and discussed children’s welfare while a future meeting was planned.
Riddell son of Mr and Mrs Ridell from Peoria will become a midshipman in the United States Navy as a member of the Naval Academy class departing on Friday in June. Announcement from the superintendent confirms his appointment after completing high school in Peoria.
The Henry post office will be closed all day Friday in observance of Memorial Day. Windows will be closed and there will be no rural delivery.
The Marshall County Selective Service Draft Board will cease operations on May 29 and over eleven hundred pounds of records sealed in steel cabinets will be shipped to the State headquarters in Chicago. Since 1940 the board supervised the induction of 12,000 to 15,000 men into the armed services, with original members led by Ray B. Litchfield and longtime staffers serving through the war.
Mr and Mrs Harry Sivells and their daughters Sharon and Pat y start today for Downey California by car with personal effects in a trailer. Weather changes alter plans from northern route. Mr Sivell, a roofer siding worker for Hunter in Henry, will do carpenter work in California. Ray Sivell, a brother in construction, lives in Downey near Los Angeles. They sold Green Street home to Carl Sendelbach and stayed in Arthur Smith residence after moving out months ago.
Paul Berry plans to leave for Arizona on Wednesday June 4 to dispose of household goods and appliances. The following day he, Mrs. Berry, and Kenneth will move to Phoenix to make their future home, having previously spent time there and owning a home. They sold their Henry residence to Elmore Meyers and wife of LaSalle, who intend to operate a beauty shop in Henry. Meyers is brother to Larry Meyers, manager of the Henry Kroger store. Berry, a noted Henry businessman, once partnered with John Moline in Berry and Moline Radio Sales and Service and earlier ran the Phillips 66 station on Third and School Streets. Berry also served as a Henry alderman for several years. Meyers, a WWII veteran, has studied beauty culture in Chicago, while Mrs. Meyers has operated a LaSalle shop for nine years.
Mary Hauber, member of the Henry Hi School graduating class, has been accepted by the University of Illinois and will enroll there in February. She plans to reside at the 4 H House on campus.
Union Vacation Church School opens June 2 with sessions for four year olds and up. Sponsored by the Presbyterian Christian and Methodist Churches the program centers on Wider Relationships with Bible readings hymns and special classes led by Mrs James Henderson Mrs Joseph Screeton Mrs Richard Finfgeld and Mrs Robert Hagerstrom. Junior and intermediate groups will use the Methodist Church library with Clara Jean Kirby as librarian and the Presbyterian Church library with Peggy Fintgeld. General registration is in the Presbyterian Church at 9 00 am June 2.
Illinois Senate advances a rural tavern bill sponsored by Senator Richard J. Barr Joliet. It would close about a half dozen taverns in Marshall and Putnam counties and similar numbers in Peoria county. The bill faces opposition from the Illinois Retail Liquor Dealers Association which urges members to push for defeat.
Henry Post No 323 American Legion holds its regular meeting this Thursday evening at the Legion hall. Further plans for the 4th of July celebration will be discussed and plans for the Memorial Day service tomorrow will be finalized. Refreshments will be served after the meeting.
The Hea rn News-Republican will publish a full page display in honor of Varna Township High School 1847 graduating class. Sponsored by Varna business leaders and the community the edition will feature photos of the graduates the principal LeRoy Peterson and the new Varna Township High School building. The class includes 23 graduates the largest in the school’s history.
Hugh Hastings is pictured wearing a gold ring recently awarded for fifteen years of continuous service with the Country Life Insurance Company. The recognition marks a milestone in Hastings career and reflects long-standing dedication to the firm.
Memorial Day events led by American Legion Henry Post 323 and affiliated groups start at 2 p.m. Veterans are urged to join the observance honoring fallen service members. The Women’s Relief Corps handles flowers as marcher groups move from the Legion hall to Henry bridge and then to Henry City cemetery for tributes.
Fr Clifford addresses St Marys Parochial School graduation on May 22 at St Marys Church. He cites education, home training, and service, presents diplomas to all graduates, honors Barbara Ann Nichols and Donald Merdian for citizenship, and notes high catechism honors.

The lingering wet spring keeps farmers across Marshall Putnam and nearby counties anxious as fields stay flooded. Only about 10 percent of corn is planted state-wide versus the usual 75 to 90 percent by late May. Some growers expect two weeks of drying before any planting, while others face ongoing delays and rising feed costs.
Rev W F Powell and wife and four daughters from Bethany Illinois visited Henry and Lacon yesterday calling on friends in both towns. Mrs Powell stayed with Mrs Hubert McDonald in Lacon while Rev Powell and the children toured Henry. Powell led a Mexico tour for several residents and plans another June trip. Participants include Roger Monier of Sparland, son of Mr and Mrs Leland Monier.
American Legion Auxiliary Henry unit No 323 sold 1000 poppies before 3 30 Saturday and cleared 80 for the focal Auxiliary fund. Total sales reached 130 with 50 credited to veterans who made the poppies.
Don Rickey of Henry will perform on the Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour Sunday June 1 from 12 30 to 1 30 in Chicago. He urges Henry and area residents to vote by name or number for a chance at one of three prizes. Voting can be by postcard or by calling the station. send name and address and contestant name or number on one card. Rickey plays banjo, recently a hit on the V W Minstrel program at Henry High School and has roots from ukulele to tenor before joining Cotton Bailey and his Ozark Pals. He hopes for a big break on this national broadcast.
Swaney Magnolia High School honors Charles Bunting and John A McKirgan for the 1947 senior class rankings. Bunting, son of Robert W. Bunting, led with top academic honors, excelled in basketball band and plays, and plans Illinois science studies. McKirgan, son of John McKirgan, closely followed as salutatorian, active in basketball track band chorus and plays, and will pursue mechanical drawing engineering at LaSalle Peru Junior College.
Erie A Derry of Rushville New Jersey has been appointed as county manager for Marshall Putnam Counties. Born on a Menard County farm, he farmed for years before becoming a fulltime insurance agent in Menard and later served Schuyler County as general insurance agent and wartime organization director. Married with six children, he recently bought the John E Barry residence in Henry and will start June 16. Derry has long associations with the farm bureau and comes highly recommended by his home county.
Henry High School plans for 115 students to enter as freshmen next year after a Thursday registration. Principal Roy F. Steele notes registrants include Senachwine and Henry High School graduates plus eighth graders. Officials estimate total enrollment may reach 140 to 150 with rural district eighth graders yet to register.
Henry Post 323 American Legion offers tickets for a four day July 3 to 6 celebration in Henry with prizes totaling 1500. Merchants provided merchandise for distribution. Ed Brennan says turnout is expected to be large. Planned events include fireworks, contests, free acts. Proceeds will fund the Granbury building purchase and potential community center expansion.
Farmers keep watch for clear skies and a break from daily downpours that have slowed May fieldwork. Despite a brief Monday lull, rain returned, with seven dry days so far this month. Weather observer Haddon Perdew notes the record pace of rainfall.
Frank Halagiere, former A P Food manager, opens Royal Blue Food in Henry in the A P building. The remodeled store features aluminum exterior, green and cream interior, removed rear partitions for space, new produce rack with fluorescent lighting, and all-new meat department equipment under Herbert Mattern. Former A P staff return to assist, including Mrs Halagiere and several employees.
The Henry area approved a new consolidated grade school district after a light 98 to 25 referendum. The district includes Henry city, parts of Whitefield and surrounding rural areas with ten country schools joining Henry Grade School. A June 3 meeting will elect a representative board of education.
The city installs new white street signs with black letters in the business district to aid navigation for residents and visitors. Bert Hoppler and John Martin oversee the work, with signs shouldering away the need for directions from townspeople as free mail delivery begins July 1.
Four high school annuals are being printed this week in the Henry News-Republican commercial department. The schools receiving editions are Henry Township High School, Lacon Community High School, Swaney Magnolia High School, and Gilman High School.
