Henry Library Receives Brown Memorial Gift of 1000

Henry City Library receives 1000 from the estate of Stephen Clare Brown of Hollywood. Brown previously gave 500 for the Ethel Claybourne Brown Memorial collection and 500 to start a building fund. The current gift adds to a building fund to seek a new home for the library in Henry.

Reverend Gibson Addresses Rotary on Man and God

The Henry Presbyterian pastor Reverend L. Gibson spoke to the Henry Rotary Club at the Farm Bureau building Monday noon. He reviewed Man-Don Stand Alone by A Cressy Morris son, arguing nature and science imply a purposeful intelligence behind creation and identifying this as God. Christmas Mail Rush Nears End With Heavy Parcel Volume

Post office officials expect the Christmas mail load to be cleared by tonight with an extra Saturday and Sunday delivery. Parcel post deliveries are about the same as last year, stamp sales through Tuesday near prior levels, and total stamp usage may rise as more mailing days remain before Christmas. Heavy mail flows began last Thursday as the peak rush continues.

Birthday Celebrations for Elderly Residents at We nona Rest Haven

Mrs Zotela Stransenback aged 98 and Mrs Magdalene Docerman aged 96 marked December birthdays at the We nona Rest Haven. They enjoyed festivities with guests including Miss Margaret Lawless, feature writer for the Venona Index, who listened to Civil War era reminiscences. The storytellers recalled water wheels, rudges, hitching posts, and other bygone rural details.

Paddock Club Sparland to Reopen Under New Management

The Paddock Club, run in Sparland for years by Al Dell, will open Monday under Mary McKeon of Spring Valley. McKeon brings nine years of hotel experience. Mr and Mrs Dell have lived in Sparland for years. Dell also ran a merchandise business and was a noted antique and curios collector.

Henry-Senachwine Board Pushes Unit District Petition

The Henry Senachwine High School Board of Education filed a petition with County Superintendent C. W. Swanson seeking a election on forming a unit district on the west side of the Illinois River with Henry as a proposed high school attendance center. The petition covers Henry and Senachwine townships, and parts of Saratoga, Whitefield, Hopewell, Putnam, and Wheatland townships, including Sparland and La Prairie areas.

Ralph Child Resigns State Calibrator Post

Ralph Child of Henry resigns after six years as calibrator for the divisions of standards in the State department of agriculture. His duties included checking petroleum meters at refineries and transport sites across southern Illinois. Millary of East Peoria continues as the other downstate ATCO calibrator in the division.

Organ Recital Postponed At Lindbloom Funeral Home

Christmas music was scheduled for Thursday evening on the portico of the Lindbloom Funeral Home but has been postponed to Sunday at 8 PM. The Hammond organ recital continues as planned.

County Unit School Plans Defeated in Marshall and Putnam Counties

Voters in Marshall County and Senachwine Township Putnam County rejected a proposed two large unit school district plan spanning both sides of the Illinois River. West unit results showed urban 245 228 opposed and rural 848 against 186 in favor. east unit opposition was overwhelming 890 to 16 in urban areas and 784 to 116 in rural. Wenona and Toluca strongly opposed any cross river reorganization. Lacon favored the west unit 128 86. Petitions for reorganization have been filed in several districts, with Toluca and Venona set for elections and Sparland, Henry Senachwine pushing for larger units nearby. County superintendent C W Hanson proceeds cautiously to meet legal requirements.

Campaign Donations Increase Maryhall Putnam Milk Fund Total

Arthur O'Brien of Henry Marshall Putnam chairs the drive and reports $60 in new donations forwarded to State headquarters. From Hennepin and Bennington Townships the gifts total $60 from the Park estate. The new additions bring the Maryhall and Putnam counties total to $7,766.74 against a $7,175 quota, with further student contributions anticipated for the milk fund.

New Postal Rates Take Effect in January

An entirely new schedule on postal rates goes into effect January according to Postmaster Francis Lee Wright of Henry. The schedule lists increased rates on nearly every form of mail except the three cent rate on letters and first class mail with a one cent on souvenir cards. A detailed schedule will be published next week or available by request at the local post office.

New Henry Area Bus Route Announced by Peoria Charter

Walter W. Winkler, president and general manager of the Peoria Charter Coach Company, announced a new bus service to Henry. The route will start Monday with four LaSalle to Peoria trips daily and special service for Caterpillar employees. Bus stops will be at Hayline's Restaurant and a downtown area near the railroad depot. Tickets sold at LaSalle and Henry depots. schedules to be posted. Winkler also secured a nationwide charter franchise and noted past Lacon to Peoria routes as the basis for the new service.
