Flat Rock Historic District Redefined as Summer Resort Heritage
A revised nomination expands the Flat Rock Historic District to include 1 575 resources with 610 contributing items. The survey covers 1827 to 1964, tracing Charleston elite families, the area’s transition from rice plantations to a summer retreat, and the current grounds including the Flat Rock Playhouse and the Richard Ton Lowndes House. The district gains National Register status for Entertainment and Recreation use, while several nonhistoric areas are removed to protect integrity.
