Hearne Track Team Ties For Fifth In Waco Relays

The Hearne Track Team tied for fifth at the Waco Midway Relays on Saturday March 12 among sixteen teams including six 23AA District squads. Top finishers include Robison and Mart in field events, Hearne’s Petty and Murphy earning silvers in 880 and 100 yard dash, and the Hearne 440 relay clocking 43.1 seconds as they competed against strong district rivals. Coach Jimmy Reeder noted strong performances against quality teams and emphasized seeing district competition at the meet.

Hearne Council Approves Parks Study With Schools

The Hearne City Council approved a no cost plan to study improvements for three parks with Hearne Public Schools. A joint recreation complex was proposed at Bob Jones Park or nearby school property. A planning team from Parks and Wildlife Department will assist.

Hearne Science Fair Scheduled for March 19

Hearne schools host a science fair on March 19 from 9 a m to 3 p m with students in grades seven to twelve showcasing biology chemistry and physics entries. Entries will be displayed in the gym and judged on creative ability scientific thought thoroughness skill clarity and dramatic values with an all school winner to be named once judges are announced.

Patrolmen Nab Three for DWI in Week of Incidents

Highway patrolmen arrested three for driving while intoxicated during the past week along with one marijuana possession arrest. Two DWI incidents were linked to a March 12 crash on FM 391 involving Farley Bennett of Hearne and Joe Vasquez of Giddings, with Bennett and passenger Anthony Duran treated for head cuts. A second March 12 crash in Franklin involved William Sanders and Vera McLellan with no injuries. A March 8 Calvert-area collision killed a Shetland pony on Highway 6 north of Calvert, and a Weatherford man was cited for defective turn signals after a separate Highway 6 crash near Hearne.

Franklin Music Students Place at Region Eight Contest

Franklin High School music department entries at the Region Eight Solo Ensemble Contest in Temple on March 12 produced several top finishes. Travis Wilkins, an eighth grader, won first for his tuba solo and the cornet trio with Beckie Currie, Kim Reeves, and Pam Hodges. Dena Quinn earned a second-plus for her alto sax solo, and Lynn Wilkins won a second for her flute solo.

Commissioners Discuss Health Outreach and Tax Reforms

County Commissioners Monday discussed a Texas Department of Health Resources proposal to establish outreach health clinics in county cities. They tabled a state contract to clean under the U S Highway 79 bridge over the Brazos River and reviewed the Pereto Tax Bill reappraisal proposal with defenses that tax raises require voter approval. A public hearing on game rules and regulations is set for March 22 at 8 p m in the County Courthouse, and bills to be paid were read.

Police Beat Reports Hearne DWI, Warrants, Theft

Hearne police report last week included two arrestees on county warrants, one DWI, and two DWI incidents plus one drunk driving case. A Budweiser beer truck theft occurred March 14 at 2:42 p.m. and was recovered near FM 465 by the Little Brazos River. A young black male was charged with theft on West 10th Street. bond set at $1,000 and jailed in Franklin County.

Hearne PTA Last Meeting

The Hearne Parent Teacher Association will hold its last meeting of the school year at 7 p.m. Monday, March 21, in the High School cafetorium. A square dance by a Junior High group directed by Mrs. Stella O Neil and a fashion show by the High School Future Homemakers of America under Mrs. Lyn Palmer will be on the program. An exhibit of Junior High science projects will be shown. Newly elected officers for 1977 78 will be installed by Dr. Henry Benarden. Members are reminded the deadline for Post cereal box tops and Campbell soup and bean labels is March 31. To receive audio equipment from Campbell, 9 942 labels are needed. 400 have been collected to date. Please send labels to school or give to a PTA member before March 3. All members are urged to attend.

Kirk Retires From Hearne Postal Route After 24 Years

Obie W. Kirk retired from the U S Postal Service in Hearne after beginning as a clerk carrier on April 1 1939. He moved to Route One mail carrier in 1963 and served until retirement. his daughter Mrs Juanita Elliott of Bryan succeeded him as route carrier.

Honor Society to Install New Members at Hearne High

Hearne High School chapter of the National Honor Society will install new members in the high school gymnasium on March 18. The program begins at 10 08 a.m. and is open to the public.
