Police Charge Three With Forgery Attempt

Hearne police arrested three black men Saturday afternoon March 5 and charged them with attempting to pass a forged instrument. Bond set at 2000 each before Justice of the Peace Jack Mathews. Two men from Gause released on bond. third from Hearne remained jailed Tuesday.

Drug Education Director Completes Values Course

Hearne Public Schools crime prevention drug education director Jack Brooks completed a values unit with grades nine through twelve. The two and a half day program used Values Clarification to reveal each student value system and included exercises such as name cards voting, group discussions, and a four group fall out shelter activity selecting six survivors from ten.

Nursing Homes Directors Meet Planned in Cameron

Activity directors from seven Central Texas counties including Robertson County will meet March 14 at the Cameron Nursing Home to adopt by laws for the TNHA council for social and activities directors. Plans will be made for the Texas Nursing Home Pageant in Bryan on April 15 with the Bryan winner advancing to the state pageant in San Antonio.

Hearne Migrant Program Honored At Waterwood Conference

Hearne High School Principal Leon Jackson and Mrs. Gail Sharp spoke as consultants at a Waterwood workshop on migrant education. District Six administrators attended along with Hearne Federal Programs Director Mrs. Linda Hoppe. Jackson said Hearne’s migrant program is among the district’s best.

Buchanan Leaving P M, Accepts Georgetown Job

Joe Buchanan of 913 Calvert Street will become vice president at Citizens State Bank in Georgetown working with loans. He will leave Planters and Merchants State Bank on March 11 after about 18 months in Hearne. He serves on the Chamber of Commerce board and is treasurer of the Lions Club and Salvation Army, plus treasurer of the Brazos Valley Fair Association since January. He and his wife Dena praise Hearne residents and their two daughters Pamela and Audra.

Women's Division Rules For Robertson County Youth Fair

The Robertson County Youth Fair and Rodeo announces women division rules. Entries must be in place by 9 a.m. on March 25 at Fireman's Hall, with judging around 9:30 a.m. Public viewing occurs after judging. Each entrant may submit one entry per class across all divisions. Prize money comes from auction results. Forsthoff Transferred To Harlingen Patrol

Sgt. Fred Forsthoff a highway patrolman with 12 years service in Hearne has been transferred to Harlingen. He left for his new duty station last week before starting work March 1. The Forsthoffs live in Hearne with son Michael 14 and daughter Pam 10. They are active in Church of Christ. he was a deacon and she taught Bible class. Mrs. Forsthoff held PTA offices. He is a Kurten native and married in Blasburg Pennsylvania after a year as a Bryan policeman.

Franklin Pupils In Science Fair

Franklin junior and senior high school students will seek top honors at the second annual science fair on March 14. About 25 students are expected to compete for all show status under the supervision of Mrs. Pam Walker and Mrs. Kay Vance. Dr. Don Witzel of the Texas A&M Toxicology Laboratory will head the judging panel with two additional judges to be named. The event is open for public viewing during school hours in the school building, with ratings announced around 2 p.m. Also scheduled are Thorndale track on March 11, football banquet March 17, Hearne livestock show and 4 H meeting March 26, and the junior senior prom on April 1.

PTA Board To Meet Monday Hearne

There will be a meeting of the executive board of the Hearne PTA Monday night March 14 at 7 p m in the homemaking department in the Junior High School. Present and incoming members are urged to attend. This will be the final executive board meeting of the season.

Hearne Eagles Put Four on All-District Basketball Team

District 23AA coaches named the All-District Basketball Team with Hearne earning four picks. Lester Davis 6'1" led first team points while Earmond Hammond 5'10" joined him on the first squad. Second team includes Anthony Scamardo 6' and Larry Murphy 5'1". Hearne finished 9-5 in district play and 20-13 overall.

Mayor Draws Opponent As Three File For Alderman

Contests shape up in Hearne city offices for the April 2 election. City secretary Joe Turner lists candidates for mayor and aldermen. Richard Shear filed for mayor, while Bill Palmes seeks reelection as city attorney. Alderman candidates include Ron Ellis Nolan Griffin and Frank Abate with Griffin and Abate both Hearne natives. Absentee voting begins March 18 with in person voting April 2 at City Hall. Voters in Precinct Two go to Hearne Fire Station and those in Precinct 21 to Junior High auditorium. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm.

Hearne Varsity Team Sixth In Hearne Eagle Relays Track Meet

Hearne High School finished sixth of sixteen at the Sixth Annual Hearne Eagle Relays held at Wood Field last Friday. Coach Robert Davis directed the meet and Hearne earned 37.44 points behind strong showings from Larry Murphy 10.2 in the 100, Charles Roach 10.3 in the same event, Paul Moore 53.6 in the 440, Jesus Garcia 43.5 in the 330 hurdles, Del Wayne Thomas 43.7 in the hurdles and 16.8 in the 120 hurdles, Murphy 23.97 in the 220, Chuck Jackson 9 feet in the pole vault, Herbert Walker 4:53.2 mile, and a 3:42.6 mile relay. Top teams were A&M Consolidated, Madisonville, Elgin, Caldwell, and Navasota. Davis thanked the Hearne Quarterback Club for its support.

Lake Palestine Tourney Opens Booger County Bass Club Year

Booger County Bass Club held its first tournament of the year February 26-27 on Lake Palestine. Jim Webb won first place with Gary Broadus and Calvin Rachus finishing second and third. Ronny Swaner earned big bass honors with a four pound fish. Next meeting is March 14 at 7 30 p m. The next tournament will be March 26-27 on Lake Conroe from Shiloh Marina with 6 30 a m start and 5 p m weigh in. All are urged to attend the March 14 meeting where door prizes will be awarded.

Brazos Valley Youth Art Show Returns to Allen Academy

Hearne Junior High School will enter the fifth Brazos Valley Youth Art Show at Allen Academy in Bryan. Viewing hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday March 19 and 20 with judging Saturday morning. The traveling trophy goes to the school with the most points. Bellville won last year. About 250 students participated previously.

Little League Meeting Set in Hearne Fire Station

The Hearne Little League Association will hold a meeting for parents and coaches on Thursday night March 10 at the fire station. The group will reorganize and plan the coming season during the business meeting. Those interested in Little League baseball are invited to attend.

Hearne High School seniors toured the Texas Legislature in Austin on Wednesday March 9 as guests of Representative Bill Presaal. The trip aimed to observe governmental processes and learn about state government firsthand.

Week One collision reports minor damage to car

Patrolman Gary Henderson notes a single collision in the past week 5.1 miles north of Calvert on March 2. A dark colored cow wandered onto the road from a private drive, injuring no one. The driver Rufus Wallace of Waco was unhurt and the car had minor damage. Three people were arrested for driving while intoxicated and one for marijuana possession.

First Baptist Hearne Hosts Living Proof Revival

The First Baptist Church of Hearne hosts a Living Proof Revival from March 13 to 20 with services at 7 15 p m each weekday. Evangelist is Rev William B Webb of Meridian Mississippi, a Baylor and Southern Baptist Seminary graduate who previously led churches in Ohio and Kentucky. His wife Mrs Webb is a Mississippi native and Peabody College graduate. Edmond Smith leads music. he hails from Hearne and serves Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Gressville.
