Fifth Annual Hearne Relays Held on Saturday

The fifth annual Hearne Relays will be held at Wood Field on Saturday March 6. Sponsored by the Hearne Quarterback Club, events begin with field events at 9 am, preliminary runs at 11 am, and finals at 4 pm. Freshman and varsity teams will compete among Calvert Franklin Bremond Bryan JV Fairfield Westwood of Palestine Madisonville Navasota A M Consolidated Rosebud Lott Leon Cameron Montgomery Allen Academy Grapeland and Hearne.

Ellis Announces For City Council In Hearne

Ron Ellis of Hearne filed to run for Hearne City Council in the April 3 election bringing the slate with incumbent Dr Bill Doherty and John Miles Jr. Also on the ballot are reelection seekers and School Board incumbents Dr Ken Kennamer James Florence and Steven Pursley. Ellis, a disabled veteran and Florida native, has lived in Hearne since 1969 and resides at 405 Barton with wife Jane Russell and their two children Trease Ann and Billy.

Conroe Bank Names Charles Hrdlicka President

Charles R. Hrdlicka III was elected president of the First National Bank of Conroe, effective Monday, March 1. A Houston native aged 37, he has 15 years in banking, led as president of Great Southern Bank for three years, and held senior roles at Bank of Texas after SMU graduate work. He and his wife Andrea Reed have three daughters, Kim, 16, Beth, 12, and Karel, 9.

Court Agenda Announced for Commissioners Court Meeting

Judge Wesley Peyton outlines the agenda for the Commissioners Court meeting on Monday March 8 at 10 am. After minutes, bills are paid, then a discussion with Dee Dee Williamson of the Texas Highway Department. Lenten Wednesday Services at St. Philip’s Church Begin

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church holds Wednesday Lent services at seven o’clock led by Rev. James P. Dannelley. Short services follow covered dish suppers in Valesca Marshall Parish House. Visitors include Mr. and Mrs. Elton Wood of Jacksonville visiting Hearne with sister Mrs. R. I. Riggs and brother O. W. Kirk.

Hearne Eagles Fall 4 3 at Bryan JV in opener

Hearne basebal lteam coached by Tommy Dotson lost to Bryan JV 4-3 after taking an early 2-0 lead. Daniel DeStefano opened with a single and later scored, Bruce Henry sacrificed, J D Wilkins hit a triple, and Melvin Bates added a run. Bates pitched four innings with six strikeouts. Hearne totaled five hits, Bates leading with two RBIs. They face Huntsville Hornets March 5 at 11 am in the A&M Consolidated tournament.

Calvert Baptist Church Announces March Revival

Calvert Baptist Church, led by Dr. Joe W. Bailey, will hold a revival from March 14 to 21 with seven o'clock nightly services. Evangelist Rev. James Franklin Eaves of Fort Worth leads, with music by Mr. and Mrs. Conny Ware of Dallas. Eaves, a Southwestern Seminary professor since 1973, has pastored multiple churches and traveled widely. he is married to Jeane Illman and has two sons, James Hillmas Eaves and Mark Vankiia Eaves.

Tracy Varvel of Hearne is accepted to Baylor Dental School in Dallas. A 1972 Hearne High School graduate and ACU senior pre dental major, he is son of Dr and Mrs Lewis F Varvel Jr. of Hearne and one of 19 ACU students heading to medical schools next year.

Three Hearne students earned Distinguished Student ranking at A&M University for posting a grade point ratio of at least 32.5. The list, limited to the top 10 percent of enrollment, includes Cannon Scamardo and Stephen Terrell, son of Mr and Mrs J Garisad Terrell.

Youth Art Show Welcomes Brazos Valley Students

Seventh to 12th grade students from about 30 schools in Brazos Valley will compete in the fourth annual Youth Art Show hosted by A M Consolidated Middle School in College Station March 6 and 7. Ribbons award in each category. best of show and best Bicentennial exhibit chosen by judges. Viewers vote for show favorite. results announced at Sunday reception. First and second place works will later be displayed in Bryan Public Library. New Chairman for Robertson County Savings Bonds

W. E. Pritchett, president of the First State Bank of Hearne, will serve as voluntary Robertson County Savings Bonds Committee chairman. He will lead a year round effort to boost Savings Bonds purchases through banks and payroll savings. Pritchett is Hearne Chamber of Commerce treasurer and a member of the Hearne Industrial Foundation. he and his wife Mildred and daughter Heather live in Hearne and attend Grace Methodist Church.

Presbyterian Church Ordains Two Officers in Calvert

Following the Sunday worship at First Presbyterian Church in Calvert on March 7, Mrs. Cooper Wiese and Mrs. John W. Anderson will be ordained as ruling elders. Both longtime active church members have chaired Women of the Church and taught Sunday School. The ordination will be conducted by minister W. A. Engstrom with elders John W. Anderson and C. P.
