Hearne city and school board race add three candidates

Three Hearne residents filed by the March 3 deadline for alderman seats in the April 3 city election joining Howard Anderson Nolan Griffin and Baylor Carrington. John H. Miles Jr. Dr. Bill K. Doherty and Ron Ellis seek reelection. Sylvia Bulot Jr. filed for school board position six, currently held by Steven Pursley. James Florence and Dr Ken Kennamer are unopposed. Polls open 8 am to 7 pm at Hearne Fire Station Precinct Two and Junior High Auditorium Precinct 21 for city, and Junior High Auditorium for the school board and county school board elections.

Two Appointed For Vacancies In County Offices

County Judge Wesley Peyton swore in March 1 as Euphenia Franks is Precinct Four constable and Vivian Jones as Precinct Four justice of the peace. Katherine Galloway witnessed the ceremony in the county courthouse. Franks and Jones appear May 1 on the Democratic Primary ballot unopposed. Commissioners Court appointed them to serve the rest of the year. Franks can be reached in Bald Prairie and Jones in Seale Round Prairie communities.

Dogwood Trail Trees Peak Soon Despite Fires

Hearne-Wheelock Road dogwood trees should reach peak beauty by Sunday March 14. A large number of trees were destroyed by fires several months ago.

Hearne Council OKs Norwood Lane paving plan

Hearne Texas Monday night approved a cooperative paving plan with the Texas Highway Department and Robertson County to improve Norwood Lane from the cemetery to FM 391. The project cost the county 7000 dollars with 800 to the city, while the state will invest about 200000 dollars on FM 391.

HHS Class Of 1956 To Plan Reunion

Hearne High School alumni of the class of 1956 plan a 20th year reunion. A meeting will be held Sunday March 14 at 2 p m at the home of Mr and Mrs Joe Moore Jr between Hearne and Gause to organize plans for the summer reunion. All former members are urged to attend.

Robertson County Youth Fair Set for March 27

The Robertson County Youth Fair will be held March 27 at Fireman's Hall off Highway 190 northwest of Hearne. Entries in the woman's division must arrive by 9 a.m. that day. Judges are Sam Houston State University home economics students. Four categories clothing, handiwork, arts and crafts, and foods offer junior, senior, and adult divisions with trophies for grand and reserve grand champions. Entry limits, auction of food items, and entry blanks details provided by local teachers and County Agent Harry D. Smith.

Hearne student Kent Brunette wins UT Cactus Goodfellow Award

Kent Brunette of Hearne is honored with a UT Cactus Goodfellow Award for leadership service and campus involvement. His biography will appear in the UT Cactus honors section and he joins 48 UT students in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He is a 1975 UT graduate, a second semester government graduate student, a course grader for The Problems of the Presidency, and an administrative aide to Rep. Bill Presnal.

Hearne veterans and auxiliary of World War I will gather Monday March 15 at the Davis Street Hearne Community Center at noon for a pot luck dinner. All members are urged to attend.

Twelve Hearne youths at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Twelve Hearne youths participated in events at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last week. Hearne 4-H members showed barrows including Richard Langford Tommy Ray Reynolds and Claude Sonny Tindle III. Future Farmer members Bob Bishop Earl Hardcastle and Jack Deason showed barrows, FFA students Mark Wiley and James Rasco showed steers, Keith Jentsch entered the turkey competition, and Hearne 4-H'ers Jacky Fulton and Mike Bradley won calf scramble certificates worth 275 dollars toward a registered calf. The 4-H livestock judging team — Craig Jentsch Tommy Ray Reynolds and Richard Langford — placed Langford fourth in swine judging. other results to be mailed to County Agent Harry Smith.

Calvert Boy Wins Calf Scramble at Houston Show

Butch Wootan of Calvert participated in the Houston Livestock Show on Wednesday, March 3, and caught a calf early in the calf scramble. He earned a $275 certificate toward purchasing a registered Brahman heifer. Sponsor was Francis Construction of Galena Park. Wootan is an honor student at Calvert High School and a Future Farmers of America member. William E. Bishop Jr. accompanied Wootan.

Lecture Program At Hearne High By NASA Demostration

NASA's mobile lecture demonstration led by Dennis Ammon visited Hearne High on Tuesday March 8. The program, part of the Space Science Education Project, ran about 50 minutes and covered aeronautics, rocketry, propulsion, satellites, probes, orbits, human factors, communications and manned space flight. Ammon, space science education specialist for NASA at Johnson Space Center, spoke to students and offered classroom visits for deeper space topic discussions.

Salvation Army Fund Drive Set to Start March 18

T H Stotts announced the annual Salvation Army fund drive will begin after a kick-off breakfast on Thursday March 18 at 7 am in Dena's Restaurant. Stotts chairs the local service unit committee and seeks workers to support the drive funds used for underprivileged services in the coming fiscal year.

Hearne School Board Approves 1976-77 Plan and Purchases

The Hearne School Board met Monday night to approve selling two school lots near Hackberry Street and a 1976-77 calendar from August 18 to May 27. They revised senior test exemption policy, budgeted 14000 for vocational equipment, and set a textbook committee for 1976-77. The state will contribute 610,000 toward council approval.

Billy R Hall Given Probation by U S District Court

Judge Jack Roberts sentenced Billy R Hall, 38, of Robinson formerly Calvert, in U S District Court on Monday March 8. Hall received three concurrent one year suspended sentences and was placed on two years probation.
