Two Hearne Men Burned In July 13 Gas Explosion

Two Hearne men aged 55 and 64 suffered second degree burns in a gas explosion while working on leaky water pipes under the J. H. Collier home in Mumford around 10 am on July 13. They died later at Temple Veterans Hospital. One man crawled from under the house, others described hearing knocking before the blast. The cause remained unknown.

Graduation Held In Youth Phase Of Nutrition Program

The Youth Phase of the Expanded Nutrition Program held a July 16 graduation for the first youth group and leader to complete nine lessons in Robertson County. Mrs. Darlene Cook of Franklin taught the class under Mrs. Rose Johnson. Certificates of completion were presented by Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Cook to eight youths, including Robert Edwards and Sheila Cook, at Mrs. Cook's home.

Swim Lessons and Thursday Swim Lessons close on July 22

Coach Robert Davis announces that the swimming lesson phase of the Summer Recreation Program will close on Thursday July 22. He notes all other program activities will continue until further notice.

Bunch Downs Ladies Team Upset Centerville in Softball

The Booger County Bunch beat the Centerville ladies 14 to 11 in New Baden on Tuesday July 13. The win improved their season record to nine wins and one loss. They head to the Jewett Softball Tournament this week.

Field Training Cadet Ronald A. Polk of Hearne finished the ROTC field training encampment at McConnell AFB in Wichita Kansas. Polk is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Polk of Hearne, whose father is a retired Army master sergeant.

Texas producers no longer pay sales tax on select farm items used in food and fiber production starting July 20. Exemption requires a certificate for items bought from vendors unless listed as exempt, with definitions of a farm and notice that home gardens do not count.

Aaron Slick Will Return Back by popular demand is the Calvert Little Theater's dinner production of the melodrama Aaron Slick From Punkin Crick. The repeat performance is scheduled for July 30 31 in the Calvert Hotel owned by Phil Atkins. Reservations are limited to 50 per show and may be made by calling 364 2468. Hearne VFW Post Auxiliary Meeting Planned

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10358 of Hearne and its auxiliary will hold a monthly meeting on August 5 at 7 p.m. in the Hearne Community Center on Davis Street. Quarter Master Zane Grey Wallace said all veterans with foreign war service and their wives and daughters are welcome.

The third annual Franklin Tennis Tournament for Robert son County residents runs July 31 to August 8. Junior events start 9 a.m. July 31, senior events begin 5 30 p.m. August 6. Moss Attends FHA National Leadership Meeting

Sabrina Moss, Hearne High School sophomore and third vice president of Area VIII, was selected as a delegate to the Future Homemakers of America National Leadership Meeting in St. Louis. About 1500 delegates attended the four day event with workshops, values clarification, and discussions on the home economics role in a consumer society. Moss also serves on the student council and is class president, daughter of Mrs. Helen Moss of Hearne.

Robertson County Community Hospital has added about 23000 in medical gear over 90 days including an EKG transmitter an ambupack portable X ray machine and an operating room cardiograph A new emergency radio system will link ambulances hospitals and doctors once activated The EKG system sends readings to Waco cardiologists for rapid interpretation and on call doctors monitor patients remotely

County Gross Hits $12 Million In First Quarter Sales

Robertson County reports a total gross sales of $12,967,159 for Q1 ending March 31 from 276 outlets per Comptroller Bob Bullock. Taxable gross shows $4,570,200, deductions of $1,412,226 and use tax purchases of $18,994 reduce to $3,176,968. County mailed one percent sales tax checks July 15 for period to July 2. Hearne allocations net to $4,405.92. Franklin $452.12. Bremond $166.66. Calvert net $627.49.

Three Robertson County Traffic Accidents Reported Last Week

Three traffic accidents occurred in Robertson County last week with minor injuries reported for the involved persons per DPS highway patrolman Gary Henderson. Incidents include a July 16 collision south of Calvert on Highway 6 injuring John L Tayler and a later crash seven miles north of Calvert with Walker Elton Johnston. and a July 14 collision on Highway 70 involving Jack Kates Wilkins Jr. and Johnny Wyatt Sawyer with no injuries.
