Hearne School Board Ponders Addition Of High School Wing

The Hearne School Board met for two hours and agreed to continue evaluating the cost and feasibility of adding three classrooms and a science lab to the high school. The plan would connect to the cafeteria area and add about 4,600 square feet with completion likely at the start of fall 1977. If built, ninth graders would attend the high school. The Board of Equalization urged a full property reevaluation district wide. The board accepted five teachers’ resignations and reviewed next year’s student handbooks. The district affirmed equal opportunity employment status.

Trail Ride From Hearne to Barrville Ranch Planned

A Sunday trail ride will depart July 18 from Hearne to Barrville Ranch with an 8 a.m. gathering on Norwood Lane. Riders will reach the ranch for a barbecue lunch and the public is invited. for more information call 279-9005 or 279-5861.

Bruised Friday In Car Accident Near Hearne

A car driven by a Waco woman struck a tree seven miles south of Hearne on Highway 190 at 12 50 p m Friday. The driver Laurie Ann Bowden age 19 sustained bruises and abrasions but was not hospitalized. The 1972 Toyota left the roadway on the right side and traveled about 150 feet before hitting a dead tree. DPS officer Fred Forsthoff rated vehicle damage as five on a seven point scale.

Recreation Program Having Good Season in Hearne

Hearne city runs a summer recreation program with swimming tennis and gymnastics for all ages. Coach Bob Davis says the season is good and improving. Free pool passes grant public swim and class entry at East Side Pool with boys 8:30 to 10 and girls 10 to 11:30.

County Court okays road upkeep and vehicle purchases

The County Commissioners Court at its monthly meeting passed a resolution to begin renewed upkeep of a neglected county road five and a half miles north of Meerne parallel to Highway 72 on its west side. County Clerk Katherine Galloway noted the road spans about one mile and had not been maintained for four to five decades. The court will assign the necessary tasks and procure a motor grader for the precinct to perform the repairs and maintenance deemed necessary.

Calvert Little Theater to stage Aaron Slick play

The Calvert Little Theater presents a dinner play on Friday and Saturday July 16 17 at the 1872 Calvert Hotel to celebrate the bicentennial. Tickets include barbecue at seven with 8 15 curtain. Hearne High Pupils Attend Annual FFA Meet

Three Hearne High School agriculture students Gregg Moore Joe Ferrara and Todd Dent accompany two instructors Donald Bumpurs and Gilmer Gaston to the State Future Farmers of America Convention in Dallas. They depart Tuesday morning and will stay until Friday noon. State officers and the Texas FFA Sweetheart will be elected, Lone Star members recognized, and honorary members honored. About 10 000 attendees are expected. Fort Hearne hosts in service workshop for agriculture teachers August 2 to 6. Fort Hearne currently has about 75 FFA members.

Car Wash to Fund Summer Camp Travel

A church car wash will be held Saturday July 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the First Baptist Church parking lot. Youths from the church sponsor the fundraiser to send two RCAARC Activities Center students to August camp. Wash and vacuum price includes transport back home if desired.

Council Rejects Lone Star Help For Gas Line Costs

Hearne city council rejected Lone Star Gas request for compensation over costs of lowering altering and maintaining underground lines tied to the street improvement program. Lone Star estimated 1980s year expenses at about 147,? and projected more in 1977. Council authorized audits and approved a local sales tax suit filing with the state. Hearne Loses Power 20 Minutes Sunday Night

Citywide blackout hit Hearne from 10:35 to 10:55 p m when a Brazos Electric line fault disrupted a power connection supplying 10 to 12 percent of Hearne s load. The break triggered the city s breakers and delayed reactivation as generators restarted one by one. Last outage occurred in May 1975 during a storm.

Golf Association Meeting Set July 25

The Hearne Golf Association will hold its annual general membership meeting July 2 at the Municipal Golf Course. An election of officers for the coming year will be held at this time. A scramble tournament will begin at 2 p.m. prior to the meeting. All participants must register in the pro shop before July 22. Dinner will be served after the tournament and meeting.

Hearne Public Schools received permission from the U S Department of Justice in Washington to establish a polling place at the Fire Station for annual school trustee elections held the first Saturday in April. The second location allows residents to vote in city council and trustee elections at the same site and time.
