West Side Drive In Robbed Of 300 Dollars

An unidentified gunman robbed the West Side Drive In Grocery at 708 Brown Street last Friday afternoon July 23, escaping with about 300 dollars. Hearne Police say a black male in his early 20s, about 5'10" and 150 pounds, wore dark pants and a black shirt with yellow designs, and carried a pistol thought to be a .22. Clerk Maria Barrera and a customer, Saul Swain, witnessed events. the suspect left as Swain observed him. Investigations by Hearne Police and Robertson County officials yielded no leads as of July 26.

FHA Officers Hold Meeting at Hearne High

Hearne High School Future Homemakers of America officers met Friday evening in the home economics room to plan the coming school year. Mrs. Lyn Palmer discussed sponsor duties with the officers and introduced new home economics instructor Mrs. Cindy Campbell.

Workshop At Calvert School Three Day Arts Course

A three day adult arts and crafts workshop will be held in Calvert High School’s homemaking department from August 3 to 6 under the direction of Mrs Catherine J Rector. The sessions run 1 30 pm to 3 pm each day with Mrs W D Lander and Mrs Rector leading two sessions on embroidery and gate. Adults eager to learn new crafts or share a talent are welcome to join.

Hearne Schools Begin August 18

Hearne plans to start the 1976-77 school year at 8 30 a m August 18 with about 1700 students enrolled across four schools. On August 12 six days before classes start, faculty meet at Hearne High School band hall to hear policy discussions and the superintendent will present plans and expectations for the year. Last year enrollment was 1705.

Food Stamps Meeting Set in Hearne Center

Mrs. Mary Grandham of the State Department of Public Welfare announces a food stamps meeting Friday July 30 at 10 a.m. in Hearne Community Center. Attendees may discuss stamp costs or refusals and learn about benefits for the aged including home care or eye glasses with assistance from Mrs. Jane Andrews and John Henry of Waco.

W R Anderson Killed In Wreck

William Ray Anderson of Houston formerly Franklin was killed in a car wreck Sunday night. Funeral arrangements were incomplete Monday afternoon. Anderson graduated Franklin High School in 1908 and is survived by his parents three sisters and two brothers.

Monthly Singing at Mearne Center Friday Evening

The community monthly singing is set for 7 38 p m Friday July 30 at the Mearne Community Center. Guests vocalists from Bay town League City and Tombell are expected to attend. All who like to sing are urged to join and bring 8 uset.

Clark Gable Sells Shop to Ken Martin in Hearne

E C Gable owner of Gable s Auto Supply Hearne since 1952 sold his hardware and sporting goods store last Friday to Ken Martin of Easterly. The shop will relocate across the street to 105 Fourth Street in the former Hearne Building and Loan building. Gable 65 retired to spend time hunting and fishing in Hearne.

4-H Members Encampment At Lake Trinidad

Members of 4-H Clubs from Robertson Milam Grimes and Fayette Counties attended a three day encampment July 19 21 at Texas Power and Light Company Lake Trinidad two miles south of Trinidad on the Trinity River. The 753 acre lake offers a cafeteria dormitories swimming pool and theater and serves as an annual encampment site for Texas 4 H and similar youth groups in summer. Activities included swimming fishing baseball volleyball movies folk dancing and arts and crafts.

W. F. Sander was reelected president of the Hearne Golf Association at the regular membership meeting held Sunday July 25, with Miss Martha Slagle as secretary treasurer. New directors are Dr. Jack Lyons Charles Luster and Holland Sowma. holdovers are James Fiorence Leon Denena and Billy G Hall. A club scramble preceded the meeting with 33 golfers. first place eight under par were Tommy Dotson Billie Palmos Ralph Leslie and Billy Batson. second seven under par included Dr Lyons Hattie Stubbs Ecb Elliott and Holland Sowma.

Seven Traffic Accidents Investigated In Robertson County

Department of Public Safety records show seven traffic incidents in Robertson County during July 21 to 28. The cases involve multiple injuries, two drunken driving charges, wildlife collisions, a rollover, a fatal fawn hit, and a motorcycle collision near Franklin.

Tragic Drowning of Eight Year Old Boy in Brazos River

Eight year old Wylie Lloyd Tullous, son of Mr and Mrs J C Tullous of Franklin, drowned in the Brazos River near Calvert on Sunday around 11 30 a m He slipped from an embankment while on a camping fishing trip and was retrieved by Hearne volunteer fireman Jimmy Deal and Robertson County Deputy Sheriff Douglas Tuttle at about 1 20 p m Despite rescue attempts by Gerald Boring and others the body was found about 15 20 feet from where he fell in The embankment stood four feet high and the water depth was 15 20 feet The drowning was reported by Calvert City Marshall Tommy Singleton and the sheriff E P Elliott who coordinated the drag operation until success
