Retaking Begins According To Japs

United Press war report says Japan claims a new invasion of the central Philippines began with possible landings on Suluan island and Leyte Island, as American forces under MacArthur and Nimitz reportedly press ashore from Morotai and Peleliu with air support from the Pacific. Japanese claims say most U.S. forces massed for an assault remain far from the Philippines and that an invasion has not yet been confirmed by Allied commands.

Grange Opposes Postwar Plan on Compulsory Service

The California State Grange approved resolutions opposing immediate enactment of postwar compulsory military service pending national legislation. Vollman Trial Postponed As Ewing Is Ill

Grant L. Ewing, principal state witness in the Vollmann bribery case, was ill and confined to his Richmond home, delaying testimony in Oakland. Deputy D A Folger Emerson told Superior Judge Ed Tyrrell that Ewing suffered inflammation of the shoulder joint. The prosecution contends Vollmann took a $5000 bribe while with the Farm Production Council.

Blood Donor Service Continues in Hayward and San Leandro

CIO Grants Seniority To Veterans of War

Recreation District Wins Approval of 4 Local Groups

Lions Name Committee for War Chest Carnival

At a Lions Club meeting President Roger Andersen announced a committee of ten volunteers to assist in plans for a War Chest carnival. Improvement Club Federation Okays Local Bus Lines

Federated Improvement clubs of Hayward Area meet and decide not to endorse the proposed bus lines as individual groups. FDR to Speak in New York and Philadelphia Next Saturday

President Roosevelt will address crowds in New York City next Saturday night after touring the metropolitan area and is also expected to appear in Philadelphia. Girls Face Charges In Rape Case
