The Hayward District Community Chest aims to reach its 8700 dollar minimum, with about 6000 pledged so far. Local business districts pledge 1256 to 3500 in cash, while organizations and firms plan 100 or more, and the drive closes by Armistice Day to fund continuing welfare needs and Red Cross distribution.
Hayward's Fred Wagner teases a grand bass haul from Antioch river ports while L. Lewis, a meat chief, is away fishing. Four days pass with no catch or photos, leaving Wagner doubting Lewis would recognize a fish or a sucker even in a mirror.
The former Congregational church pastor, now retired, has come from Los Angeles to re explore the old town. He notes many changes and says the town looks all penped up while he pursues work at a Biological Institute. He met old friends and counts his stop a real pleasure.
Local crusade churches in Hayward Christian Methodist and Presbyterian report stronger Family Day attendance than Easter with many large families and neighbors invited to sit together. Churches challenge each other to show the most enthusiasm as Young People's Night promises a big evening service and carpenters may repair pews after the strain. Sunday is expected to test the momentum.
The Tennyson PTA holds a regular meeting Friday in the school auditorium with invitations sent to all district parents. On Saturday a whist party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Eric Ruus will raise funds for the Christmas fund with refreshments and prizes from Harvard merchants.
Mr and Mrs M Madsen of lower A street mourn the death of their son Russell age 29. They returned Tuesday from Fresno where they were called by his death. Funeral services were held in Fresno Monday. He was well known here and had many friends who mourn his passing.
A large sale will be held at the Daingerfield ranch near Russell City on Saturday October 26 by Frank Alves owner. He will sell 30 head of cattle two horses two wagons a large lot of farm equipment including planters harrows and cultivators and 20 tons of baled hay. The sale starts at 1 oclock with lunch at noon and Oakes Caton will handle retail sales.
The city council approved the Prospect Hill assessment district to fund $47,000 in improvements by Jones & King on Main and Prospect streets. Frank Electric won the fire alarm system bid, underbidding two competitors on six of seven items, and will underground lines on Castro and B streets. The project also includes traffic signals at Main and Castro and Sayre street sewer plans, plus a revised milk ordinance reflecting Oakland laws.
Hayward high school meets Piedmont at 3 45 Friday afternoon at the high school field in a County Athletic league clash. Captain Mervyn Yates and tackle Ernest Temps lead a retooled line as Hayward seeks improvement in blocking and execution after last week’s tough loss. Blaisdell Smith out with a leg injury, otherwise the regular lineup is expected.
Mrs L Dillingham of San Antonio Texas visits the Heyer residence. She formerly owned Dillingham Apparel now owned by Miss Jessie Ritchey. Captain Dillingham stationed in San Antonio expects to return to San Francisco. They plan to live in California again and look forward to being Californians once more.
Harry Lee the Oakland Credit Association manager invites Hayward members to inspect the new quarters at 1207 Harrison tonight or Friday evening from 7 to 11. The note mentions a “flock of blondes” aiding the event and promises an enjoyable look at the upgraded facilities and services for members.
PG E lists steps for safely using natural gas appliances until a gas utilization man arrives. Instructions cover gas valves air shutters ovens water heaters and automatic equipment with guidance to adjust flames, avoid yellow tips, and shut off automatic burners if unsure.
Alameda county American Legion council to present a plan for county Veterans Memorial buildings to the county board of supervisors. Fred B. Mellman leads the delegation with a hopeful outlook for the Harvard memorial. Local posts and auxiliary members attend, with installation of Livermore post officers and a Halloween party planned in Hayward.
Classified sale notices list by owner include selections of Jong padded fava bean seed and grape varieties, wine grapes and juice, American Blues and New Zealand stock, White Leghorn stock, hens and a goat. Also lost dog German Police Pap, rewards offered, and a new dance studio opening by Bernies Pickelle at Shafer building.
Judge Jacob Harder Jr. will hear multiple cases including Lawrence Petersen charged with issuing a fictitious 476 dollar check from San Diego. Thomas Foster accused by wife of assaulting her daughter. Tom Rodagues faces burglary allegations. O W Hodges to appear for a 126 dollar bad check. A seagull shooting incident prompted a 25 dollar fine for Jesse Simmons.
The Business and Professional Women’s Club hosts its annual bridge and whist party at the Masonic Temple at 8:15. Mrs Amands Simon chairs the event with committees in place. Many prizes await the highest scores as the public is invited for a pleasant socially and financially successful evening.
Orchary avenue Neighborhood club members enjoyed a luncheon at Mrs J M Lane’s High street home Tuesday with autumn decorations and Mrs Lane’s daughter Mrs Charles Wright of Oakland assisting. Guests included Mrs Lawrence Moll Mrs W D McLeod and others.
In Hayward California on October 17 the defense began presenting its case in the murder trial of Vincent Cataldo, charged with killing Police Officer George Veirio Hayward. Prosecution finished its evidence after five witnesses including neighbors Constant and Gay, Fire Chief Riggs, and Dr. Hamlin. Cataldo, calm yet defiant, pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity as defense lawyers prepared their strategy.
Mrs Ida Campbell wife of Edward Campbell died in a local hospital early Thursday after illness spanning years. Former Hayward resident sister to Mrs Dehaven Oakland and others. native of the state. Funeral at Sorensen Brothers mortuary on Saturday at 16 oclock with burial at Lone Tree cemetery.
Henry Hernandez a 32 year old San Leandro resident escaped serious injury when his legs were burned in a boiling tomato vat eight feet deep at the California Conserving company plant in Hayward. He slipped and fell into the vat Tuesday but was saved by his quick grasp of a railing and fellow workers. He is recovering at Hayward Central hospital.
