Luxury Tax Aims to Cut California School Taxes
Sacramento reports estimates that four percent luxury taxes on non essentials could reduce local school tax obligations by at least 50 million dollars statewide. Dixwell L Pierce of the state board of equalization says plans for a small levy on non essentials will be announced within four months. Hayward area would see at least a quarter cut in local school taxes, with articles like cigars cigarettes and cosmetics included in the potential levy. The plan also requests county boards to lower local levies in proportion to tax revenue received from the luxury levy to ensure tax relief rather than new revenue.

Burglars Steal Groceries From Lorenzo Store
Burglars forced entry to the Faria and Soite grocers shop in San Lorenzo on Tuesday night, taking groceries candy and cigars and tampering with the safe. The cafe area sustained damage estimated at sixty dollars or more to repair. Police hope evidence will identify the culprits.

Mrs Georgie Brown Passes to Beyond
Harvard mourns the death of Airs Georgie Hall Brown at her brother David Hall’s home after a long illness. She taught in Missouri, widow of G S Brown of San Francisco, and was closely connected to local circles. Services at Sorensen Brothers mortuary Saturday at 2 pm with a Christian Science reader, burial at Lone Tree cemetery. Mr Hall, sole surviving sibling, cared for her.

Publisher William Zambresky Nearing Return Home
William Zambresky publisher of the San Leandro Reporter and former secretary of the San Leandro chamber of commerce may return home later this week from Providence hospital in Oakland where he has been confined for several weeks. He was stricken at his residence on September 25 and rushed to the hospital in an unconscious state with systemic poisoning cited as the cause of his collapse.

Funeral services for Jack August Jr. were held at All Saints Catholic church with Rev. Father Patrick J. Stack officiating. Pallbearers included Manuel Moi Tao, Roderick Gonsalves, Joseph Valin, Joseph Sedrea, John Limpa, and Frank Morris. Burial followed at St. Joseph’s cemetery. Pratt mortuary handled arrangements. He was 16 years a city resident, survived by his wife Mary, and by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack August Sr. A bank book found by Florence Moniz was later reported, with the owner asked to come forward.

Workmen for California Conserving Co erect a large shed to enclose new pickling tanks at the Pickle Works plant. The Rebero property adjoining the plant was bought to allow plant extension and a $60,000 warehouse is planned early this year. Tomatoes are being processed at the Hayward plant as the season nears its end with favorable weather hoped for. Mrs Henningsen and Mrs Andersen are vacationing in Ukiah.
