United Press reports American forces pierced the Siegfried line north of Aachen, advancing about four miles in the first day of a major offensive. The breakthrough, the third in the line, opened a corridor toward the Rhine as heavy fighting continued.
Port Chicago sailors Ernest Brown and Julian Dixon testified they suffered dizzy spells when asked to load ammunition after the Port Chicago blast that killed at least 22. Navy mutiny charges could carry death for the 50 sailors who refused orders. William Loch said he feared handling ammunition and denied attending a meeting or listening to others refuse work.
Navy prisoners escaped from Yerba Buena disciplinary barracks in San Francisco after attacking a guard, disarming him, and commandeering a Navy pickup truck. Navy spokesmen said San Francisco police and two Navy shore patrol units were trying to recapture them as they moved along a road.
Republican candidate Thomas E. Dewey resumes campaigning with an 18 minute radio speech on taxes. The address opens October campaign phase and will air from the Albany executive mansion between 5 48 p m and 6 06 p m PWT on Mutual. It will be rebroadcast in Pacific zones from 9 45 p m to 10 p m PWT on Mutual stations.

Admiral Ernest J. King and Secretary James Forrestal met with top Pacific naval officers in San Francisco to map strategy for destroying Japanese power. The conference reportedly drew on plans from the Quebec Churchill-Roosevelt talks, with attendees including Admiral Raymond Spruance and other senior officers.

Mr and Mrs John Rives of San Leandro received a telegram announcing their son Staff Sgt Phillip Ricca was a German prisoner of war. He had been reported missing in action on September 5 over Italy while serving as an armored turret ball gunner on a B 24. He has overseas service of six months and holds the Air Medal after one and a half years in the army.
Dr. Harveld McCarter of the Elementary school board and O. Paulsen, superintendent of Hayward Union High School, attend the State School Trustees Convention in Los Angeles starting Monday.
Three boys discovered a box containing 10 US Army rifles near the race track at 150th Ave and East 14th St. in Hayward. The youths from San Leandro and Ashland reported the find after informing a friend who notified police. They had moved the box partly for safety and feared theft accusations.
Two dog bite reports were filed with the sheriff on Monday. Norma Jean Avana, four, of 1048 Harmony Drive, was bitten on the lip area by a dog owned by Jeannette Brauer, 1054 Harmony Court, after allegedly provoking the pup. James F Haywood, five, of 29590 Baumberg Avenue, was bitten on the left leg above the ankle by a small brown and white dog owned by Hay Walker of Shamron Stock.

Detroit faced a potential CIO strike as the United Automobile Workers maintenance workers council threatened to walk out at 12:01 a.m. pending immediate fact finding by the War Labor Board into wage rates. About 1,000,000 workers could be affected across some 300 plants following a decisive meeting of 1,000 delegates. Six representatives were sent to Washington to avert the action.
Two children, Joan Joaquin age 5 and Lorceilla Joaquin age 3, were injured when their mother’s car collided with a westbound vehicle at Williams Street and Orchard Avenue in San Leandro. Joan suffered a fractured clavicle and Lorceilla facial injuries. both were treated and released from hospital.
A thief broke into Felix E K Wood’s Tau 10 St home between 7 30 p.m. and Monday night and stole three quarts each of Old Taylor whiskey three quarts of scotch and three quarts of Riandy runs. Wood reported the incident to Hayward police after returning from the movies to find the house ransacked and lights on. The value was about 44 dollars.
Alfred E. Smith lies gravely ill at Rockefeller Institute, reported by his physician Dr. Raymond P. Sullivan. The former governor weakened with a relapse since early morning, suffering a congestion in the right lung that jeopardizes heart and circulation while he remains a patient at the hospital since September.
Mrs Roosevelt says she is not a factor in the coming election and doubts voters will back a candidate for reasons other than shared beliefs. She adds that any personality in the White House cannot be sent without making enemies.

Alameda county retains second place in California for elementary and high school attendance in the 1943-44 report received by County Superintendent Vaughn D. Seidel from the State Department of Education. Elementary attendance reached 10,296 per school week, averaging about 4,000 more than last year. high school attendance rose to 24,801, up 220 from the prior year. Los Angeles County led with 280,309 elementary and 124,085 high school pupils. Supt. Seidel notes funding needs total 1,202,445.73 for elementary and 2,224,587.407 for high schools, with the state providing only a portion for operation. Additional funds must be raised locally.

Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Beauchamp maintain about 2000 orchid plants in their greenhouse at 565 Kifth St. The couple started as a hobby, expanding from 72 plants to a vast collection with a learned system and study books on species like Cattleya and Vanda. Growing from seed to bloom takes six to seven years with tight humidity and temperature control and multiple daily sprays, with plant and seed costs ranging from ten to over a hundred dollars.
A stolen car driven by a 14 year old Alameda boy crashed through a guard rail on Highway No 50. It slid 353 feet before plunging 125 feet into a ravine. Two sailors died instantly and another died later at Shoemaker Hospital. The driver and two other sailors were seriously injured. The boy admitted stealing the car from the General Engineering Shipyard in Alameda. The case led to juvenile court action and probation for prior thefts.
