Reports note a lively Halloween with many youngsters on the streets. Recreation parties for teens reduced mischief, while deputies investigated egg tossing at a house and a tomato throwing incident before forcing youths to dump produce. Majestic Clothiers doors were marked but untouched otherwise.
Barbara Nichols of 2361 108th Avenue Oakand was found guilty of drunken driving after a collision. Two youths aged 17 and 18 face trial tomorrow for buying intoxicants. Richard Willis’s hit and run case adjourned to November 7. Ice and Bloss case plead Not Guilty over a defective fruit formula. Deputy Sheriff Tagen recently moved Bloss and spouse from South Bend, UK, with extradition papers. Dave Vegas pled guilty to auto theft. grand theft dismissed.
Mrs Mary Contard of San Leandro is appointed clerk at the War Price and Rationing board in the city hall annex replacing Mrs Dorothy Critchuald who recently resigned. The rent issues are not handled by the Ineal board and are referred to the Galland office moved to 10 AID 14th street.
A fire in the Economy Department store at 913 B Street at 6:20 p m yesterday burned cartons stacked in the back and scorched a wall. Fire Chief Tony August said a lighted cigarette likely started the blaze and wires serving nearby residents were damaged.
Pacific Telephone and Telegraph begins building a two story central office onondo street for Hayward dialing service. W B Sutherland notes war demand delayed expansion but now construction proceeds. completion will bring an entirely new telephone system by end of 1948 after concrete pours and installation of dial equipment.
Ford Kiesel, Markham school administrator and former art instructor in the prison education program, spoke to the Castroville Kiwanis about San Quentin. He traced the prison from 1852, noted overcrowding with 3500 inmates, and shared tales of notable inmates including Sam Whitaker, a whiskered Greek, Asa Keyes, and Frank Hagan, highlighting the prison’s brutal history and shifting punishments.
Maynard High Players present a three act comedy What A Life written by G Farford Goldsmith at the Maynard High School auditorium. Denny Chisholm stars as Henry Aldrich with the largest term play cast to date.
Five new ration stamps for meats and fats take effect today in Washington. The final four wartime stamps Four W, Xi, Yi, and Zi, plus green stamp Na, will be valid through February 28, expanding consumer access under wartime food control.
Peterson Tractor and Equipment, Caterpillar and John Deere dealer, is extending its building at 685 A Street by 150 feet in frontage and 75 feet in depth to ease parts and service bottlenecks. The addition will include a sunken spur track for three freight cars, a truck loading ramp, a revolving crane, expanded parts housing, and storage for machinery and implements to improve handling and speed of service.
Hayward Union High School board announces Lieut. Commander MH B Long has been released from active duty with the U S Naval Reserve and returns as principal of Hayward Union High, effective today. The district plans to divide academic and administrative duties to improve efficiency and notes Long’s availability supports this reorganization.
Organization of a joint Hayward Castro Valley San Lorenzo and Hayward Union High School Districts school bond coordinating committee was announced by the trustees. Representatives from each district were named including Gertrude Kennedy Ralph Anderson Casito Valley J Gutlehen A B Morris J S Haines Orland Crose Jack Rees and others. The panel elected Ralph Anderson as chairman and Jack Rees as secretary. A research committee of four district superintendents and a public relations committee were formed to unite the districts in the campaign for school bonds due January 15, 1941.
Washington reports butter prices are set to rise by five to six cents per pound at nearly all stores. The OPA approves the increase only for retailers who paid higher wholesale prices after government butter subsidies ended.
Arthur F. Manter, a blue Haywardite and longest serving city council member since 1910, recalls early town struggles to install water pipes and a water system owned by the city. He served seven mayoral terms 1916 to 1922 and 1930 to 1942, later retired then returned to service.

Notre South Bend student Joseph Concannon seventeen of Livermore was hospitalized in shock after his car ran off Mines road and rolled down a bank, ejecting him. Two others were injured in separate collisions. Maria Sanchez minor injuries in Sunnyvale, and Frank Azevedo slightly hurt in Stockton after a head on crash. Witness Jerry Davenport San Lorenz Village reported the incidents.
