Delegates at the National Convention of P T A in Oakland discussed guiding youth dances. Proposals include parent volunteers accompanying dances, addressing inappropriate dress, and ensuring curfews to prevent rides home. Mothers’ involvement and overnight stays were urged to curb lost parental contact.
County Engineer George A. Posey will headline a mass meeting in Hayward Union High School auditorium on Thursday June 2 to discuss road improvements. Organizers from the Federated Improvement Clubs of Eden Township expect broad turnout and plans include district attorney Carl Warrey and County Supervisor Charles Heyer as speakers.
Delegates from every state conclude their convention with praise for plans on sound health housing and education while commending Oakland hostesses for social events. National president Mrs A H Reev leads tributes as delegates depart for home or extended trips, including stays in California.
San Leandro held Hayward Day at the Cherry Festival with Hayward Night entertainment at the Carnival Grounds. Judge Jacob Harder Jr. chaired the program featuring Miss Mary Morgan and Miss Georgie Barney, a sixteen girl chorus, a Hayward Boy Scout bugle call, and a combined school band concert. Four candidates for Queen of the Fiesta Rodeo—Miss Eleanor Crogan, Miss Katherine Westover, Miss Minnie Crossetti, and Miss Mildren Dobbel—were introduced. Casey Jones led entertainers around the grounds, and Mrs. Kelly praised the lively showcase and turnout.
Al Fisher of American Railway Express was chosen to lead the Twenty-Thirties Club for six months. Leonard Jensen will handle secretarial duties, Clyde Engelrod will enforce penalties, Jack Young becomes chair when Fischer is unavailable, with Al Fraga and Dr. Manley assisting. Prizes went to Clarence Borneman, Bert Stephens, Leo Paimtag, and Clyde Engelrod. Copies of the new Wampus booster paper circulated amid light humor as the group begins its term.
Hayward police will enforce a new two hour parking limit starting June 1 in business blocks Castro Street from A to B Main Street from A to C and B Street from Watkins to 1st Streets. Enforcement runs from morning hours until 6 PM daily with a two hour maximum per vehicle.
The California Gardening School for Women held its first graduation in Hayward. Miss Sydney Sten earned the two year diploma, with Miss Watford Skinner noting aims modeled on Studley College. Dr. Van Aiders bestowed diplomas and welcomed the women pioneers in this new profession. Miss Stein will soon start a position in Burlingame.
Hayward Public Health Center conducts a week of pre school physicals for entering children. Clinics begin 3 pm at multiple sites with doctors assessing nutrition, vision, teeth, and overall health ahead of the fall school entry.
The Gold Star mothers of Hayward and surrounding towns are urged to contact the Hayward Women’s Auxiliary of the American Legion before June 10 to participate in dedicatory exercises at the Public Plaza. The event honors dead heroes and features a flagpole presentation, music by the Lone Sixth Coast Artillery Band, and competitive events at Booster Park.
The Fiesta Rodeo committee announced that Hank Edwards champion trick rider and Toper at Salinas last year has signed to participate in Hayward's Fiesta Rodeo week program. Secretary Judea Herder confirmed the signing for this year.
Frank Abro a 14 year old Hayward youth with the address 135 Medford Avenue has been apprehended in Sacramento by Sacramento police. He is to be returned home by the Associated Charities. The Twenty Thirties begin a new season of real endeavor.
Dan Tyer reported his Star touring car stolen from in front of his real estate office at 356 Castro Street around 4 30 Thursday afternoon. He praised Officer Louie Silva for locating the vehicle and returning it to his office by Friday morning.
The Pacific Coast renowned trick rider is billed to perform daring feats this week. He will present exhibitions of expert horsemanship including a stunt where he passes beneath the horse from one side to the other and returns to the saddle without touching the ground.
