United States Marines seize Mount Lasso, 564 feet high, on Tinian 60 hours after landing. They push inland from the northern coast, shell two miles of cane fields, and threaten deeper operations. Casualties cited include 19 Marines killed and 225 wounded with Japanese dead numbering over a thousand in two areas.
Sacramento dispatch reports the Price Administration orders a ceiling price posting system for restaurants in 26 northern California counties. By August 16 they must list 40 food items with a new base period for coffee set to October 1943.
The president and directors of the inactive Hayward Chamber of Commerce will meet to fill board vacancies and decide if the majority wish to join the new Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce being organized. The decision followed a Tuesday meeting at Groot Shutter Hotel.
Connie Ryan of the Boston Braves left the team to enlist in the Navy after being named the most outstanding player of the season. The move comes as military service calls interrupt baseball rosters.

Dr. C V Mason of the Alameda County health department said health offices will be established in Hayward City Hall by August 1. Local headquarters will address health problems with daily hours likely at city hall. main county offices stay in San Leandro. Red Cross will relocate to Room 12 at city hall as renovations proceed.
FBI agents arrested 34 year old Lee A. Caldwell in Los Angeles on a charge of offering a draft board member 50 to obtain a deferment. Caldwell allegedly after passing his physical was declared fit for military service. The complaint was filed with U S Commissioner David B. Head.
A four engined bomber from the Lincoln Army base crashed near a Kansas City suburb, destroying five homes and setting a 400 foot area ablaze. Six fliers were killed and the pilot's father in law was reportedly present when the body was removed from the wreckage. The father in law’s home was damaged by the crash.
Gov Earl Warren announces Rev Charles R Haeckel of Oakland appointed to the board of directors of the Industrial Home for the Adult Blind replacing the late Rev Joseph Mulkern. Rev Haeckel is executive director of Affiliated Catholic Charities of Alameda County.
United Press will begin full trans pacific service announced from Hollywood in the Citizen News building. The wire service will dispatch thousands of words daily by radio telegraph and cable to clients in Hawaii and pre China as Pacific areas are liberated from Japanese domination.
Cannery recruiters hold Friday session at Hayward City Hall to expand the program. Mayor Geor A. Mays appointed a committee to recruit workers for canneries in the area. A tentative plan, reviewed at Hunt Bros Packing, will be refined and enacted. Attendees included W S L. B. Eustis, Judge Jadvob Harder Jr, O. B. Paulsen, Mrs. J. Waines, Mrs. Mohes Blake, Glen Wright, Walter Gammian of the War Manpower Commission.
Eddie the Acme Hoi Oui w was arrested by Hayward police after returning to town. He admitted taking a suitcase radio lamp and other small items from Maxine Phipps on Castra Street last month to avoid theft. Louise Larson 18 of Oakland claimed no involvement and plans to marry La Croix who she and he are living with.
Charles Dawson, supervisor of Tuesday Thursday activities at the high school, notes badminton runs in the men's gym with three courts while basketball is played in the girls gym. Mrs. Fogey C. Noche files for divorce from boxer Alberto C. Noche in Los Angeles alleging she is tired of performing the punching bag role for her husband. She says the arrangement has caused strain in the marriage.
First Lt. Glenn A. Hubbard, based at 1035 Bartlett Ave, earned the Air Medal as his Eighth Fighter Command group escorted B 17s targeting Leipzig in Central Germany. The outfit destroyed 21 Nazi planes and kept no bomber losses, earning commendation from Major General Kepner for effective escort duties.
Mrs Gertrude Arnald 49 and Mrs Irene Anderson 48 from Stockton Juvenile home received minor cuts after a car rolled over on the Mission San Jose highway. A gear tire problem caused the vehicle to swerve into the opposite lane and roll 250 feet. Passengers Graham Anderson 16 and Jack Shadden 17 escaped injury. The group was en route to Santa Cruz for a vacation. They were treated at Hayward Hospital for minor injuries.
The Hay Loft in Hayward is undertaking a library corner project led by Mrs. J. S. Haines of the Hayward Ate Youth Council. They need chairs sofas and floor lamps and welcome reconditioned items or donations by calling Hay Loft at Hay 3499.
Fred Mesquedo 29 and two Oakland men were involved in a bar brawl at 115 West Jackson. Mesquedo, recovering from a foot gunshot, appeared on crutches and was fined 100 dollars to be paid in 10 installments. The others faced drunk charges and jail time. a stray shot from owner Frank Gomez hit Mesquedo.
Virgilia Parlanti, 20, of 2010 Bi Ave, appeared in Hage ward Justice court on charges of recklessly driving his motorcycle within the city limits last week. He said he was released from the army three months ago on a medical discharge. He was fined $25.
German flying bombs pounded a South England area in the fiercest raid of the war to date as British anti aircraft and fighters fought them from the skies. A London hospital was hit by a 2000 pound robot bomb killing two patients and trapping others. Rescue teams saved most patients as blasts damaged wards and an anesthetic dispensary.
Gov John W. Bricker voiced that the American people are ready for a change and will make a change in November after a press conference in Albany. He spoke before meeting with Gov Thomas E. Dewey, the Republican presidential nominee.
Delgardo 21, Freed 21, Will 21, Harold Delgardo 21, George Hinkle 17, and George Cruz of Decoto appeared in Hayward Justice court on malicious mischief charges for a ransacking of the Hayward Skeet club three weeks ago. Delgardo released awaiting Army fates. Hinkle sent to Juvenile court. Cruz charges dropped as he faces a forthcoming San Leandro coast case and is accused of stealing an automobile.
Eugene Blake, 40, of 7443 Dunn Rd was reported missing by his father, John Blake, Monday night. They had gone into Oakland on Saturday and separated at 8th and Washington, agreeing to meet an hour later. The father returned home to Hayward without finding him. The missing man weighs about 160 pounds with tight hair and blue eyes. last seen wearing blue and white striped overalls, a blue shirt, black shoes, and a white hat.
Keen interest in archery brings many boys and girls to the class led by Mrs. Bula lia Tillotson. Equipment is available for additional archers and those interested should sign up with the instructor before enrollment ends. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 8 30 p m with no fee yet.
The War Labor Board prepared to issue a directive addressing time and a half pay for peak production hours, guaranteed piece work, night shift differentials, and vacation rules. It also covers a policy requiring part time foremen to join the union and a dispute over 9 cent weekly dues for volunteers.
Two men died when a B-24 Liberator crashed and burned near Liberal Kansas yesterday. The officers say two others parachuted to safety. The deceased are Ist Lt Maurice L. Forrey, 28, of Bisbee Arizona, and 2nd Lt Charles I. Post, 25, of Mound City Kansas. Surviving widows are Mrs Eula Forrey and Mrs Florence Warmack Post.
