Negotiations Fail Meat Walkout Tonight Across Plants
More than 2,400 CIO Electrical Workers in California walked off General Electric and Westinghouse plants as part of a nationwide strike involving 200,000 union members. Pickets formed at GE in Los Angeles Ontario Oakland and San Francisco and at Westinghouse in Los Angeles and Emeryville. The walkout idled about 4,230 electrical workers in Southern California. Last week 500 workers at U S Motors 700 at Grayson Electric and other companies were struck. Initial reports said the protest aimed at wage increases of 15 cents per hour at Westinghouse and five cents at GE. A nationwide near strike loomed as AFL and CIO packinghouse unions prepared warnings to members. The AFL Meat Cutters and Butchers planned a midnight strike against 500 plants. CIO Meat Packers warned of more plants to be hit. Officials estimated 240,000 CIO and 185,000 AFL members could walk out coast-wide.

Horse Trainer Dies of Burns in Alamadi County Fairgrounds Fire
Ray Williams aged 35, a trainer at Alamadi County Fairgrounds, died from burn injuries sustained when race horses were released from a trapper in the stables during Sunday’s fire. All horses were saved, but two stables suffered about 35000 in damage. Jesus Zapien of Alvarado remained in critical condition at Fairmont hospital after being struck by a car Sunday night, with head injury and a fractured right leg. Community leaders in Wallington NJ united to seek clemency for Joseph Ke Hieswa, 20, sentenced to death by a U.S. army court martial in Japan for stabbing two Japanese in Osaka Nov. 24. He was identified only yesterday, prompting swift hometown support.
