A Barnacle club luncheon discussion in Hayward laments low local election turnout. Comparisons show May 19 145 voters in the high school trustee race versus 11 425 of 17 000 registered in 1944 presidential election. Encouragement to vote tomorrow for school bonds and local trustees.
Sacramento United Press reports Governor Earl Warren warned that heavier taxes could follow if legislators push a plan to divert 40 million dollars from California’s 235 million dollar state reserve. He said state funds should only support state construction or emergencies, opposing city and county access.
The sheriffs office reported a robbery of a red bulldog bank containing about 120 dollars in small change. Mr and Mrs Robert Conn of 20551 Western Avenue left their home between 8 15 and 9 40 p m and returned to find the bank missing from a clothing closet, noting one ear was broken.
Ground broken tomorrow for a proposed $150000 amusement center on the old Oakland Speedway at San Lorenzo junction. W. E. Linn of Oakland and associates own 45 acres of Coelho estate land. 15 acres were sold by Bruce McCollum. Plans include a stadium for professional football, drag racing tracks, a golf driving range, and horse racing proposals with Gilmore Stadium operators showing interest.
An Alvarado resident Jesus Zapien was reported in critical condition with a head injury and a fractured right leg after a pedestrian collision on Washington Avenue last night. Several other drivers including Alfred Wood LaCrone and Thomas Littell sustained minor injuries in separate crashes around Dublin Canyon and Livermore areas.
Hayward wires introduce a new one million dollar dial telephone system. Pacific Telephone manager W. Sutherland says dials will be installed on all new and some existing installations as maintenance requires. A progressive rollout will start on a date to be announced. The system will cost over 1 million for land building and equipment and is slated to operate by year end. Construction of a central office on B Street between First and Second is expected to finish later this year, after which installation of dial equipment will begin.
Jacqueline Murtaugh, 17, daughter of W. J. Murtaugh, Pearl Harbor civilian employee, is recovering after major surgery at St. Luke's hospital. She was transferred from a slow merchant ship to a Navy transport while en route from Honolulu to San Francisco with her mother after appendicitis.
A blast aboard a tanker in Manila harbor sent most of the crew overboard at Pier 1. The ship's deck blew up and the crew, though in a state of panic, were rescued with only minor injuries reported.
Ben Gonzales proprietor of Stonehurst Poultry store settled with the Office of Price Administration for 760 dollars after a probe found about three times the overcharge on chickens sold above the ceiling price. Hayward Price Central Board conducted the investigation and announced the settlement today. A Pearl Harbor committee clash followed as CIO and Republicans pressed Congress to take action while accusing the inquiry of delaying needed legislation. An Improvement Club meeting at 170th Avenue will discuss tract 68 assessments and hear a school bonds question from Marlin Haley.
A fire destroyed two 300 foot stables at the Alameda County fairgrounds in Pleasanton. About 50 race horses valued over 100000 dollars were freed and ran into the infield before some were recaptured downtown. Trainer Rey Williams, 94, suffered burns and was hospitalized. No horses were injured. The blaze burned for an hour before control.
Secretary of State James F. Byrnes urged the United Nations to promptly form an atomic energy commission and to use the UN as a trusted force for good. He warned against overloading the newborn UNO with issues and emphasized peaceful dispute resolution. Byrnes opened the first general debate, noting the charter’s flaws but pledging the U N to become a working institution with broad support for practical reforms.
Bill Rutledge 50 of 723 Filbert Street reports a tool box with electrician tools valued at 250 dollars stolen from his car parked in the driveway. Missing between 6 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sunday with initials B. R. on the box.
Russell R. Finn, 44, of 5040 Fulton Street, San Francisco, attempted to extinguish a car fire with a garden hose yesterday. The sedan, parked at 904 Hesperian Boulevard, was completely burned.
Hayward residents vote tomorrow on bond issues totaling over 1 million dollars affecting Hayward high and three elementary districts San Lorenzo Hayward Castro Valley. Polls run 7 am to 8 pm at 14 precincts including Markham Burbank Muir and Castro Valley school sites. PTA volunteers offer transport and assistance via local schools and Hayward High.
Local citizens urged to donate wearable gar ments to schools or firehouses as the Victory Clothing drive enters its second week. The national effort targets 100 million garments for war torn nations, with bedding and shoes also needed. Joe Schenone, local chairman, urged maximum effort and mentioned items should be clean and shoes tied in pairs.
