NLRB official Joseph Watson advised that the CIO should represent 50,500 Northern California canner workers as their bargaining agent. A decision from the NLRB in Washington is expected within two weeks, with prior vote totals showing CIO and AFT leading to contested ballots. negotiations for a 1948 contract across 70 canneries are urged, while a confrontational notice calls for immediate bargaining with growers and professors.
Seven hundred Caterpillar workers at the company plant in San Leandro were to resume production of agricultural equipment after a settlement of a three day strike. U.S. Labor Commissioner Wayne Kenaston announced the terms were not disclosed. The strike began October 26, called by Local 284, District Lodge 116, IAM AFL.

The Review learned that the B street building housing the Hayloft and Hunt's Creamery was reportedly sold but S. E. Reinhard denied the sale on behalf of owner Mrs. Georgiana Woods. Reinhard stated the building will not be for sale and negotiations for a new lease with Harry Carr of Majestic Clothiers were not yet finalized. A Community Council committee was appointed to study rules for the Hayloft’s legal designation.
Monahan spoke to Lions Club members yesterday at their Jac meeting, detailing his role as veterans counselor and explaining the GI bill of rights, the subjects veterans face, and the opportunities and advantages available. Birthdays for Mrs Marianna telegh and Dr Herman Hggert were noted.
A public hearing on the proposed zoning ordinance will be held at 8 p.m. tomorrow at city hall. The City Planning Commission, chaired by Herb Way, has studied the ordinance in regular meetings. CHINA ASSEMBLY CHUNGKING (U.R) The Kuomintang proposed today that China’s national assembly convene on May 5 to purify the new constitution and replace the one party regime with a representative, dual election government.
Edward K. Shanton was appointed to the board of trustees of Hayward elementary schools to fill the unexpired term. Frank Perez was confirmed as Way by Vaughn Seidel, county superintendent of schools. Perez’s resignation followed work pressures at Quirreil. Shanton, former anti-cashier of the May Wie branch, has 25 years at Bank of America and now links with Hayward Electric and Appliance Center. He is chairman of the Hayward branch of the Oakland Red Cross and serves on local selective service board No. 74, with ties to Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, and View Water District.
Judge Jacob Har presided as Beatrice Fedarff of 88 Westfield Avenue accused a discharged serviceman of failing to provide support for their two children Vernon and Roland. The defendant, previously found guilty before service, corrected his status and began allotment payments but later fell behind. The sentence is scheduled for January 23. Deputy District Attorney Frank Crews noted rising concerns about veterans’ irregular alimony payments due to strikes and unemployment. This was the first such case tried in court.
The U N O received Britain’s order to place three African mandates under trusteeship and Jan Masaryk proposed UNO control of the entire world armaments industry. General Eisenhower announced demobilization plans and a nationwide broadcast. The House Labor Committee rejected Truman labor reform by a tie vote.
Hearings ended yesterday in Oakland Superior Court over the Oro Loma Sanitary District condemnation action against Oriole Avenue and Plaza Drive properties. Property owners’ attorney is Frank Harris. Sanitary Board counsel is Ernest K. Wilson. decision and damages will be announced soon.
The Kiwanis club of Hayn met at Castro Villa to outline activities and programs for the year ahead. New president Robert Krag announced 1946 committees while Frank Castellucci, 1946 vice president, spoke on choosing meaningful talks and the value of concise speech. Pred Cox chaired the session.
The California legislature honored Edward K. Strobridge of Hayward for his 27 years as a county official and service in both houses. Assemblyman Francis Dunn Jr. lauded Strobridge’s public careers and contributions to Alameda County, with Speaker Charles Lyon calling him an outstanding citizen. The tribute occurred as the body adjourned on Tuesday.
In Sacramento the state assembly opened postwar funding battles proposing to appropriate 244 million for sale and public works. An 80 million division of reserves to cities and counties for sewers roads and local uses led the agenda. Governor Warren then faced a 14 million state construction bill. A move to pull the fair employment practices act from committee followed a 10 to ? hostile vote, as the governor opposed splitting 90 million between cities and counties to fund state obligations.

Fire commissioners of the Purview district select PLE Van Pell of Oakdue for a new district truck. It will be delivered around June 1 at a cost of 8500 including tax. The department has raised funds through paper salvage over four years and five months, with residents contributing most of the price. About $700 daily is saved for a building project, while paper salvage sales continue. Fire Chief Bill Walters urges disposing of clean papers to reduce fire hazards and promises pickup service for stores with paper stock.
Amid a broad industrial crisis that idled nearly a million workers, President Truman prepared to submit a labor proposal. Police clashed with CIO and other union pickets in Los Angeles and Chicago, with injuries reported and arrests at meatpacking sites. Congress split on a Republican motion to bypass Truman’s plan as negotiators and government officials met in Washington to seek settlement of strikes in steel and meatpacking.
State Senator Arthur M. Breed Jr. responded favorably to a telegram from the Hayward Arena Chamber of Commerce seeking use of abandoned federal hospitals for caring for mentally defiant persons, especially children. He has not seen the bill but heard no opposition and expects quick legislative action to make facilities available on an emergency basis.
