Final tabulations from a December special census set Hayward's city population at 9243, a 22 percent gain from the 1940 total of 6736. The count includes only city residents. outside serving post office area totals 6 to 40 thousand. Women outnumber men with 3806 females and 4337 males. There were 2568 dwelling units, 2547 occupied as of December 4, with some vacancies indicated.
