Olin, traffic manager for Union Pacific in San Francisco, retires today and is succeeded by H. A. Lawrence, former traffic manager at Denver. Lawrence, who had been general agent of the passenger department in New York for 14 years, became traffic manager in Denver before moving to Seattle and San Francisco, where he was assistant traffic manager in 1932 and rose to traffic manager in 1940. He stayed on to finish the war.
A string of holiday thefts is reported across the area. Victims include Forrest G. Dorkuitt of South Fork with a stolen Austrian war trophy pair of binoculars valued at 150 dollars from his car. Victor L. Schlotiman of Niles Road reporting a burglary worth 25 dollars. A Semovia on Valle Vista road losing 30 pigeons valued at 40 dollars. Marvin Richardson at San Lorenzo Village noting 90 colored Christmas tree tights stolen from a parking lot. Rudolph Figundes reporting his car stolen at Lop, with the vehicle later piloted to Clyde W. Trips on Niles Road.
SAN FRANCISCO Wl former Supervisor Warren Shannon and his wife Gloria will appear Jan 15 before the 1940 grand jury to testify in the Burns abortion mill case. District Attorney Edmund Brown announced the earliest possible date to have the case be the first business of the new jury. The Shannons had returned from Mexico to avoid publicity after Burns' defense attorney alleged they had attempted to explore many threats. Mrs Burns is to appear later this month in superior court to plead on conspiracy to commit abortion.
The court resumes its new year sitting as Ernst Kaltenbrunner, chief of the Nazi security police, faces charges of ordering the execution of American OSS men captured behind German lines in January 1945. Testimony states Himmler and Hitler ordered slaughter of Allied commandos when captured.
A government spokesman in Chungking said China planned to ask General George C. Marshall to chair a committee to end the civil war. The panel would include one Nationalist and one Communist, with Marshall as referee if a cease fire is accepted. Jehol and Kalin areas were cited, and Chiang Kai-shek’s envoy Chiang Ching-kuo was in Moscow negotiating cooperation as Red Army withdrawal from Manchuria was set for February 1.
Correia accepts AFL offer and returns to his cannery job as the CIO strike against major meat packers begins. The walkout targets Swift Armour Wilson and Cudahy, plans to affect 200000 workers, with 38000 in Chicago, threatening meat shortages within two weeks. Correia will be reinstated with back pay and weeks not worked as per contract.
Police hunt burglars who removed the kitchen sink and other loot from a residence in Puente California. Cameraman H L Underwood reported finding a For Sale sign on a house but learned items including a water heater and plumbing pipe had been stolen during the break in.
Washington report says President Truman signed a law authorizing the National Housing agency to spend 16 million dollars to provide temporary housing for veterans and families. The bill would reimburse cities states towns and universities for costs incurred to acquire surplus government owned housing units.
The Working committee of the National Shipbuilding conference met in executive session today to discuss wage demands by union shipyard workers. The 112 government reps, 112 employers, and six from AFL and CIO unions resumed talks after Colorado Springs conferences ended deadlocked. A statement by Stabilization Director John Collet suggested the federal government might approve wage adjustments for shipyard work.
Mrs Florence Van Wyck Doubleday, wife of the late Frank W. Doubleday, died yesterday at her New York home after months of illness. She was active in reform and philanthropic circles and participated in Republican women's organizations. The long, public life included involvement in charitable and civic affairs.
Adm H A Stark testified that the Navy had evidence of unusual Japanese interest in Pearl Harbor moorings a month before the attack but said the information carried no decisive warning. He noted the Tokyo to Honolulu intercept signaled harbor division for potential attack and acknowledged uncertainty over its significance.
A taxi driver and three servicemen headed for California were traveling from New York. Last week the cab brought six Marines from Los Angeles due to transport trouble across the country. A moving picture company offered to foot the bill. Driver Harry Arison said he would take a load of servicemen back to the coast, with plans to add more if Chicago is reached.
Corey Engen of Salt Lake City won the men’s Snow Cup giant slalom in one minute 42 seconds at Alta, Utah, with Dov Jennings of Aspen Ski Club second. Police identified Flores Migida Lena 42 an ex convict and Army deserter after Gordon Hudson 44 of Pinehaven Road died last night in an Oakland holdup. Cecil Minor 16101 Hesperian Boulevard planned to drive a man to Twelfth and Franklin where Minor was robbed of 840 dollars and a wrist watch. A second victim Mrs Selah Carter 43 of McGee Avenue Berkeley was shot and is in Peralf hospital. The two Hate Leamington employees were robbed of 100 dollars.
