Two days remain to register for the January 15 bond issue proposed to fund Hayward Area schools improvements. Registration hours are 7 3 pm at the Bond Main street corner and Hayward theater lobby. San Lorenzo residents may register at Costa Valley School Andrew Williams Greenwind Corp. Booths stay open through a Thursday final registration day. Jack Mitchell of Bank of America named bond issue treasurer and H S Perry is finance chairman.
The Hayward American War Veterans chapter sent a complaint to the DAV national service officer about delays in local appeals and resulting pension cuts. Pensions rely on disability severity after medical exams by government doctors, with appeals allowed within 90 days. The local chapter led by George Preswar asserts appeals lack proper consideration before pensions are set, noting past and current employment status is weighed in pension determinations.
The Hayward City Council voted 23 to 2 to approve Andrew F. Monahan for the position of veterans adviser at a salary not to exceed 2500 per year for one year. Mayor George Mays and others opposed, proposing a countermeasure tied to War Chest. Jon Alves manager of the Standard Oil Service station reports a burglary breaking the glass in the window and front door. Keys to equipment were stolen. The crime occurred likely Sunday or yesterday before opening. Papers and books lay scattered across the floor.
George T. Wisner returned to Hayward as a deputy sheriff Sunday after three years in Oakland and six prior years in Hayward.

Two major unions prepare to study President Truman s proposed end to the layoff dispute affecting 74 000 workers. The CIO United Auto Workers conference will review the call for a fact finding panel on the General Motors issue while the CIO United Steel Workers refer the plan to their National Wage Policy committee. Separate notes report a one day walkout by CIO United Packing House Workers at Cudahy affecting about 10 000, demands for a 25 cent hourly raise, and ongoing pans for lumber wage talks in the Pacific Northwest plus Seattle printer strikes and San Francisco labor unrest. News from West Coast newspapers notes a printers strike reaching day 16 and union talks at a California labor convention in San Francisco.
Police hunt two young men believed to be merchant mariners after they stole a car, crashed on Foothill Boulevard near 160th Avenue, injuring Vivian Gaylord and Marokt Smith. The stolen vehicle, linked to Stockton resident Arihn Reinman, fled the scene at high speed then vanished. The suspects, aged 17 to 19, were later seen asking for chores at the Old Alabama to raise funds to reach a ship in San Francisco.
