District Attorney Edmund Brown said he will issue subpoenas to former Supervisor Warren Shannon and his wife if they do not appear for questioning in a case involving a $35,000 payoff alleged in connection with an abortion mill. Shannon allegedly tried to extort $35,000 from Mrs Burns by threats to reveal evidence. The Shannons were last seen in Bakersfield, later mobbed while using an alias, and state officials are unsure of their location.
New York gossip column reports Peggy Hopkins Joyce, famed socialite, plans to wed fifth husband Anthony Easton, a former Britisher, after a 19 year streak without a permanent spouse. The ceremony was set for 4:90 p.m. in the supreme court chambers of Justice Ferdinand Pecor.
President Truman asked Congress to authorize a system of fact finding boards to settle labor disputes including the United Automobile Workers General Motors case. He urged workers to return to work immediately and told GM to resume production while a steel crisis board is prepared. He stressed boards would operate along emergency lines without full statutory power yet.
Mass funeral services will be held Wednesday for 16 children who drowned when a school bus plunged into Lake Chelan. Four bodies and the driver Jaele Bordande were recovered. two more were found Tuesday. Sixteen died, five children and a woman escaped. Chelan stores and buildings will close for public services at the Masonic temple.
Vice Admiral John W. Greenslade, 50, resources director of the Western Sea Frontier, retires after a half century of service. A former commandant of the Western Sea Frontier and the 12th Naval District, he served in the Spanish American War, the Philippines insurrection and World War I. He also held top posts as chief of staff to a fleet commander, commander of the battleship divisions, and leader of the fleet submarine service.
Reported string of robberies with gunpoint theft at Vargem's store on Jackson and Castro streets. Four cases of liquor and $25 from a wallet stolen while proprietor Tony Vargem slept in a rear room. Suspects unknown, familiarity with premises noted. Separate break-ins yielded $12,050 in war bonds at Wiley Mountjoy home and a failed grocery-store theft at 1080 B street. Bonds included $600 and $1,800 notes plus multiple $25 bonds. An attempted burglary at the store ended with items left in a sack and walnuts spilled on the floor.
A lively city council meeting at Bp. v today will consider approving Andrew Monahan as Veterans' Advisory council director. Monahan was chosen by the veterans' council after a stormy session in which Frank D. Stelye was rejected. The War Chest condemned Monahan's appointment and urged listing three candidates with qualifications for Hayward city council and War Chest committees to seek a replacement.
Maj Gen. Sherman Miles testified that a key warning before Pearl Harbor was not acted on by Hawaiian forces. He criticized the Short command for unclear replies and said Marshall’s warning should have prompted full alert. Marshall’s own testimony is expected to shed further light on prewar communications.
Little Rock reports the infamous Kid outlaw Mad Kimes, once a 20 year old bandit, was run down by a car on a north Little Rock street. He was admitted to Baptist State Hospital with a broken leg and head injuries after authorities questioned his family, while authorities sought over $1,600 in his possession. He gave the name Low A Woods from Miami Oklahoma and had been hunted across the Southwest for a $1,000 bank robbery connected to Morton, Vox.
The Arab League ordered a general boycott of all Jewish goods from Palestine to protest the plan to establish a Zionist state in the Holy Land. The move marks a coordinated effort amid regional tensions over a potential new Jewish homeland.
Weekend crashes across the Hayward area injured fifteen people. Names include Suaniey A Jahngen, Barry Rentell, Robert Congally, William Beck, Eleanor Sims, and others. The 12 year old Terry and 15 year old Terry and 14 year old John described the morning scene and their mother’s distress as the case unfolds.

Tokyo reports Gen. Douglas MacArthur ordered arrests of five more war crime suspects including a prince, two former premiers, and top militarists. Named are Field Marshal Prince Nashimoto, former premiers Hiranuma and Hirota, publishers Kodama Shimomura Furung and Shoriki, admiral Toyoda, and others. No charges disclosed. prior totals reach 260 suspects, with 218 Japanese seized.
Carol and Harold Gilbert will lead the third square and folk dancing session at Hayward High School tomorrow at 8 p.m. The group meets at the high school for the second time, after first classes were held at the Haylof. Sponsored by the Hayward Area Park Recreation and Parkway district, the dance is open to the public.
The Fairview fire department will hold an open meeting December 12 to elect two fire commissioners whose terms expire January 1. The meeting for property owners of the Fairview district will be held at the county fire house, 8206 Fairview avenue.
