The city council advertises for bids to finish the top story of the new city hall. C W White urges formal advertising after contract statutes review. Barry and Westlund expect to complete the shelf and first three stories by October and submit proposals for interior and top story work. Bids due by 3 PM August 27.
Castro Valley firemen’s club held a Tuesday night political gathering headlined by Judge Sarah Harder Jr. re election candidate for justice of the peace. Hayward delegation arrived with Pete Verzich beans and bacon and near beer.
The body of H. J. Unruh assistant cashier of a Berkeley branch of the American Trust company was found in the bank basement today. Officials state the death was by his own action. The incident occurred in Berkeley on August 13.
The Hayward District Community Chest sets a third meeting for Thursday night to review Budgets for the local American Red Cross and Salvation Army. Red Cross asks 1250, Salvation Army 2877.75, with prior years and rechecking noted. A total 11900 goal is planned if both budgets are approved, alongside already approved items for local welfare and youth programs.
Captain Frank Hawks landed at CURTISS FIELD New York at 6 41 pm ET after a non stop flight from Los Angeles lasting 12 hours 25 minutes He took off at 2 16 am PT beating Charles A Lindbergh s prior record of 14 45 hours for the cross country trip.
In a steady rain, Dale Jackson and Forrest O Brine piloted the Greater St Louis orange and yellow monoplane to a new world endurance refueling flight record of 554 hours 41 minutes 30 seconds at 9 52 p m central time. They dropped a green flare and an impromptu parade followed with bombs and sirens.
An employee, staying after hours to collect records, went to the basement and killed himself with a revolver. The motive is reported as health issues.
Senator A H Breed spoke at the Green Shutter hotel to Lions Club members about a proposed San Francisco Bay Bridge. He described a $72 million, double deck design with six lanes per deck to be funded by state bonds paid over 21 years. Thornton E Wilson also discussed will writing and estate planning.
National Guard Camp report states Company F Hayward unit won the regimental track championship of the 159th infantry yesterday afternoon. Cor poral George Hodgson led as top points winner. Captain Clyde Voorhees and officers celebrate the victory and hope to repeat at the brigade meet this week against the 160th from Los Angeles.
The Christian church Sunday school Bible class plans an apron social at Dania Hall Thursday evening. Superintendent Thomas Green and teachers will organize games and entertainment with contests and prizes. All are invited to attend.

The Hayward Garden club's Florence Eichwaldt will chair a booth at the California Flower Festival in San Leandro on September 3 6 and 7. The group, which won last year’s first prize, will display a 220 square foot lace exhibit with flowers donated to form a yellow apricot blue and purple design.
Mr. and Mrs. John Baxter Christensen of New York, after three months in Buenos Aires, travel to Hayward to visit Bris Christensen’s parents Dr. and Mrs Cecil Corwin and Mrs. John Christensen. Christensen represented the Pacific Eye Producers’ in South America and the pair were snowed in in the Andes. They expect to arrive in Hayward near September 1.
Oscar Baxters is promoted to assistant manager of the Harwar branch of the Bank of Italy. He has served as assistant cashier and chief clerk in charge of personnel for 18 months and will supervise perennial operations in his new role. He joined the bank three years ago after working at Se Leandro State Bank and the First National Bank of Hayward.

Gordon Hauschildt was elected master councilor of the Washington chaper of De Molay at a chapter meeting in the Masonic temple Tuesday night. George Peat was elected senior councilor and Morris Nussenbaum junior councilor. They will be installed August 26 in a public ceremony at the temple.
Hayward Union High prepares to welcome more than 150 new freshmen as the freshman council meets to plan opening weeks. Nominees for class offices include Joseph Alexander Castro Valley and Ruth Wright Sunset with George Wathern Castro Valley as president and Leslie Pence Bret Harte as vice president. Campaign posters are prepared and an election date will be announced. The school will prohibit hazing and welcome freshmen through a reception plan.
The Dahlia Society of San Francisco completes arrangements for its annual show at the Palace Hotel on August 5 23 and 30 announced by Mrs E W Lymbery secretary.
