State Engineer to Survey Hayward Crossings Tuesday
An investigation of Hayward railroad crossings will be led Tuesday by E F McNaughton of the state railroad commission aided by Hayward officials. He will inspect Southern Pacific and Western Pacific crossings with stops at lower A Street and the Western Pacific crossings in the afternoon. The survey follows a recent fatal collision and amid calls for safety measures, with Hayward Rotary backing a safety council and a 20 mph train speed proposal.

Veterans of Foreign Wars held a lively Hayward parade and initiation ceremony drawing over 1000 veterans and families from multiple cities. Alameda’s C. Gibson, holder of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and Don Marshall, candidate for sheriff, were featured as the initiation work by Alameda post members in green and white uniforms.

1000 Acre Fire Hits Oakland Sparks Across East Oakland
A grass fire believed started by a campfire swept 100 acres in East Oakland near Carlson Street and Maple Avenue today. No property damage reported as Oakland firemen contained the blaze in an hour. Miss Helen Fudel of Berkeley was burned fighting a brush fire south of the Berkeley tunnel road near the P G and E substation. The fire originated at a picnic campfire.

More than 3090 children in the Hayward union high school district prepare for fall Term openings in two weeks. Harvard area grammar schools start next Monday with Edwin Markham school handling registrations. A new botany house behind the main building, financed from surplus funds, will connect via a bridge and offer enhanced plant study and gardens around the campus.

Six people were injured slightly in an auto collision at A street and Telegraph road Sunday evening. A car driven by W. Man Tries to Mail Letter in Fire Box in Fire Alarm
Hayward firemen respond to a misfired alarm when a man attempted to mail a letter in a fire alarm box on A and Castro streets. The engine crew rushed to Box 58 on Belmar Street, Cherryland, then to No 59 uptown, finding no fire. A bystander reported the man with the letter trying to mail it in the alarm box.

General lauds work of Co. F at guards camp
At National Guard Camp in San Luis Obispo August 11, Major General Barrows and Colonel Allen praised Hayward’s Company F for the best guard mount in camp. The unit completed 24 hour guard duty, bivouacked with pup tents, and held a night of singing and a mock kangaroo court before a mountain camp. A marriage license was issued to Marcelo Tae and Rose Serpa.

Hayward Man Catches Thief
A robber broke into the Western Pacific section house at Midway last Wednesday night and stole about $53 worth of food and clothing. Foreman Dan Laushlin of Hayward phoned Livermore police and later chased the thief, catching him with the stolen goods. The culprit is described as a Mexican resident of Tracy with a prior criminal record.
