Aged Farmer Ends Life After Double Tragedy
Antone Silvera an 82 year old San Leandro farmer killed himself after the death of his son Joseph in a roadside auto accident two weeks earlier. Authorities found a bottle of Strychnine Crystals on his person and he died at Fairmont Hospital. The surviving son Antone Silvera Jr 25 reported his father had muttered he wanted to get away from this world. The two tragedies followed a crash near Livermee Falls on April 1 in which Joseph died the next day and driver Angela Canessos 50 faces manslaughter charges in Livermore Police Court.

Seventeen high school students will compete in a preliminary speech contest on Hayward's Pasture at 3 o clock Wednesday in Room 42. The Hayward's Future contest is sponsored by Freed Cox who donated 100 dollars for prizes. Any high school student was eligible to enter. Local judges include Miss Lorraine Ballinger Barbara McCullough Mrs Reestone Q B Paulson and Esther McStay. Prizes of 2 50 will be awarded to each of the winners. Winners will speak at Rotary Klwanis and Lions club luncheons and dinners the following week. The final contest before the Chamber of Commerce is set for May 8.
