Allied forces push toward Prague and Dresden as American Third Army breaches the Czechoslovakian frontier near Hof. Soviet armies press from Stettin to Goerlitz while Italians close on Bologna. Berlin’s fate looms as northern fronts advance and redoubts tighten.
Hayward plans to form a Boys Athletic Club with boxing wrestling weight lifting and tumbling under professional instructors. Police juvenile and recreation authorities join to offer wholesome recreation for 14 to 21 year olds and possibly younger later. Local civic groups will contribute equipment as gymnasiums open in Hayward schools with leaders praising youth development through sport.
Three hundred reservations for the Chamber of Commerce Charter Night dinner on Friday April 20 at Burbank school have already been received. With seating for 354, reservations are urged by phone Hay 72. Professor Raymond G Gettell will lead the speaker table discussing the San Francisco Conference on World Organization and U S world role.
Donors from Tayward contributed 217 pints to the Hector Blood Ronan service mobile unit yesterday. Florence Powe announced a goal to register 825 donors monthly to meet the quota, urging continued community cooperation. Mrs Gerry donated for the 17th time and C E Stoops had 14 donations. Cullen club members listed among attendees.
The Kiwanis kite contest returns for a second year Saturday April 3 at Bret Harte field. Open to Hayward Union High School district youths under 18, entries must fly and be home made. Prizes cover largest smallest most original box kite and a four foot grand prize. judging will focus on balance shape finish and teamwork with Herbert Roberts Babe Herrier and Roy Seavoh as judges.
A sailor attempting a break in at 665 Castro Street failed to enter Jim Pon's home Tuesday morning. Pon woke at 4 30 to a navy clad arm reaching through his window and grabbed the arm, causing the intruder to flee.
Oakland officials reported that Mayor and council candidates led in returns from yesterday's balloting. Dr. William J. McCracken Frank J Youell Fred N Morcom and James D Arcy held safe leads over their opponents as results solidified the reelection outlook.

The Cub Scouts invite residents of Any Gul living in the Hay ward to a kite flying contest at Bret Haite school field Sunday April 22 at 1 p m. Howell Lemmons, Cubbers Roundtable chair, announces John DeMuri of Markham Pack One will supervise. Prizes for two classifications Cub and Dad and Cub alone include categories for high flyer biggest smallest and most unique.
Juvenile Rooks and Minerals group will meet at Bret Harte School at 10 o clock Saturday outing April 2. They will proceed to local creek for the field trip.
The assembly approved a measure extending unemployment benefits to 26 weeks from 24 and sent it to the senate. It also moved to strike from the tax reduction bill a $57 million earmark for postwar public works, while a separate subsidy issue remains with the senate. Additional bills covered soldiers voting, primary dates, fire safety, and regulation of private retirement systems.
An Alameda County deputy sheriff headed to Oregon to question William Arthur Wellesley, held for investigation in the murder of Austin C Barber. Barber’s mummified head and hands were found in a suitcase near Fort Bragg, while his body was found in Niles Canyon in 1943. Both Barber and Wellesley quit their refinery jobs the same day and were seen together before Barber disappeared.
American B 29s renewed the offensive against Japanese air bases in Kyushu and Tokyo, burning more ground, with 42.7 square miles of Tokyo claimed destroyed. Marines battled Japanese forces on Okinawa’s Motobu hills while Luzon troops neared Baguio. General MacArthur announced hard division advances on northern outskirts and near key southern and southeastern limits.
Washington dispatch reports Ernie Pyle renowned front line war reporter was killed by a Japanese machine gun bullet on Okinawa while with foot soldiers. President Truman mourns, noting Pyle’s devotion to soldiers and sailors. He earned a Pulitzer in 1943 and left a lasting record of war from England to Okinawa.
American Third Army forces crossed into Czechoslovakia from Germany and advanced toward Prague, severing the German escape corridor. Reynolds Packard, the first U.S. reporter into Czechoslovakia, reported German defenses as countering but yielding ground along routes to Rossbach and Asche. The northern wing pushed into Chomutov area while other units pressed along the Bavarian border.
Moscow reported heavy fighting near Berlin with 250 Soviet tanks breaching lines near Selversdorf, while on the Alt Oder front Soviet forces crossed river lines southeast of Wriezen. Konev’s group reportedly broke into Parst, and Berlin said nine Soviet armies penetrated along the Warsaw Berlin corridor, closing in on Frankfurt.
Two men, Robert Christian Davis and Felmon Castleberry, were jailed on grand theft charges after deputies nabbed Davis fleeing with clothes from parked cars. Davis claimed the garments belonged to a cousin, while Theodore R. Smith of Oakland reported the stolen items and car at 1638 88th Avenue.
Charles Henderson of Oakland Polytechnic High School Wis won last night’s speech contest sponsored by Lions clubs region comprising about 25 clubs. The annual student speakers theme was What My Parents Mean to Me. Other finalists included Rosemary McDonald of Centerville and several zone winners.
A Community Council gathering is set for tonight in Hayward Union High School auditorium. Herbert Way of the City Planning Commission will discuss postwar Civic Center plans. Delegates from outlying Hayward districts will report on recreation efforts and issues. Albert F. Gordon of the Hayward Police recalls and George Forth discuss a new boxing and wrestling program for area youths.
