Street Improvements Debate Shapes Hayti Growth

The Hayti Board of Aldermen passed and read an ordinance establishing the city engineer position for road work with W. E. Gotther named. A wide plan for Third Fourth Main and Broad streets to be 60 feet then 30 feet and 24 feet sections, all hard surfaced with curbs and gutters, was proposed despite some opposition to curb and gutter. The editorial urged public spirit, noting paving is essential for progress and that local homeowners accept temporary burdens for future benefits.

Empress Theatre front gains a brighter changed look

The Empress Theatre has redesigned its front this week, removing the lower frontage to create a large lobby. The area is repainted and carpeted, with many new lights installed. Management intends further improvements.

Hayti Ladies Hold Mass Meeting Endorses City Candidates

The Hayti women gathered in the High School auditorium on March 14 to discuss and endorse candidates for the April 5 city election. Mrs. O. H. Bryant chaired. Endorsements included Brasher for Marshal C L Lefler for Police Judge and Dr J W Johnson O B Davis P S Ravenstein for Board of Education. A follow up meeting is set for March 19 at 8 p m urging participation.

Child injured by telephone truck in village accident

Four year old Francis Stubbs was struck and dragged lightly by a Bell Telephone Service Truck driven by G F Callihan on Third Street near Gaither and Stubbs store. The girl suffered minor head injuries but was expected to recover. Callihan expressed distress and said it was his first accident.

Waterworks Bonds On Agenda At Chamber Session

The Chamber of Commerce met in Odd Fellows Hall with large attendance. Members discussed adopting Constitution and By-Laws and debated a waterworks proposal to issue an additional $15,000 in bonds, totaling $30,000 for city water system. Aldermen urged to set election date. lights failed briefly. next meeting scheduled for March 21.

Robbers Enter Dorris Store Amid Window Door Prised

A. J. Dorris reports Monday night burglars entered his store by prying the door with a scantling and breaking glass. They took only the cash drawer area, missing most of the till while leaving a potential $65 sale recorded. Dorris notes this is the eleventh break in since he opened in town.
