Mighty Seventh War Loan Drive Drives Nation to Redoubled Giving

The Seventh War Loan runs May 14 to June 30 with a national goal of 14 billion dollars. It aims to raise 7 billion from individuals, including 4 billion in Series E Bonds, a 60 percent increase in E-Bond sales. Two drives will replace three as in 1944, requiring the public to dig deeper to fund Pacific operations, ship production, aircraft, and veteran care.

Fifteen Harper Graduates Receive Diplomas At Commencement

A capacity crowd attended Harper High School commencement in Benn's Hall as fifteen graduates received diplomas. Valedictorian Mary Fletcher and salutatorian Joyce Whetstone led the class. Harold Rahe was awarded a diploma for military service credit. T. M. Trimble delivered the address with Father James L. Daly giving the invocation.

Friedrich Receives Combat Infantryman Badge in Luzon Action

Private William Friedrich of Fredericksburg Texas is awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge for exemplary conduct in combat with the 43rd Infantry Winged Victory Division on Luzon Philippines. He arrived in January 1945 and joined the veteran unit there.

Airport Bonds Sold To Three Gillespie County Banks

The Gillespie County Commissioners' Court sold a 95 000 dollar airport bond issue to Fred ericksburg National Bank Security State Bank and Harper First State Bank at 4 2 percent interest paying a 190 dollar premium with a 10 year option. Bonds dated June 1 1945. County can redeem after ten years. Court also canvassed Rheingold and Live Oak school tax elections held May 12 with large majorities. Results: Rheingold Precinct 22 tax maintenance up to 50 on the 100 valuation 33 17. Live Oak Precinct 2 tax up to 50 on the 100 valuation 22 13. Court recessed until Saturday to finish business.

Overseas Pvt. Petsch in France with U S Army

Pvt Warren A Petsch son of Mr and Mrs Emil E Petsch of Luckenbach and husband of Minda Jaye Moses of Harper is with the U S Army in France. A Fredricksburg High School and Texas University alumnus he trained at Camp Fannin and after a nine day home furlough went overseas months ago. Also, Mr and Mrs Ray Jones held a barbecue for Hillary Bierschwabe on his birthday with guests including Charlie Rogers Floyd Boatright and Dave Butler. Harper visitors included Mr and Mrs Edgar Strack and children.

Four Year Old Wounded by Accidental .410 Shot in Texas

Dalton Ellebracht, 4, son of Reuben and Mrs Ellebracht of Rocksprings, Tex, was rushed to a local hospital after a playmate accidentally discharged a .410 shotgun at a relative's home nine miles from Harper. The shot struck him in the back and body from about 20 steps away. Thomas Presley Jr., 12, said he could not explain how the gun fired. Doctors said the boy was out of danger and recovering.

Retopping Harper Feg Hiway Work Starts Thursday

Mrs. Eliza H. Watkins of Harper aged 100, Gillespie County’s oldest resident, fell at home Wednesday, breaking her left leg. She was taken by ambulance to a Fredericksburg hospital, cast set, and reports say she is resting well. she will be 101 on June 24. Last year she previously broke her hip but recovered.

Reverend Allen's Son Injured in Parachute Jump

Cpl. H. E. Allen, 25, son of Rev. and Mrs. R. A. Allen, suffered fractures to his right arm in three places when he landed after a parachute jump at St. Louis Missouri on May 5 during the World War Loan Drive. His wife alerted the Harper family last week.

Veterans to be first hired as Customs Guards at Laredo

Veterans from Gillespie and surrounding counties will receive first priority for Customs Guard positions in the Twenty third U S Customs District at Laredo Texas. Private First Class Elroy P. Geistweidt aged 19, son of Oscar Geistweidt of Doss Texas, is awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on the Western Front.
