Pike's Peak visit inspires America's Beautiful hymn origin
In 1893 a group of Eastern teachers reached Pike's Peak and Katharine Lee Bates penned the opening lines of America the Beautiful after a Colorado Springs trip. The anthem, praised for noble sentiment, sparked Bicentennial designation efforts led by Edward J. Sherry with Norman Rockwell and Senator Edward Brooke. A later image shows longhaired youths signing the Declaration with a note on justice and opportunity, photo by Bob Harper.
