Secretary to keynote National Lamb and Wool Conference

USDA Assistant Secretary James T. Ralph will keynote the National Lamb and Wool Industry Conference August 7-8 at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. Lee A. Schmidt Appointed to FHA County Committee

Lee A. Schmidt, Gillespie county rancher and farmer, named to the Farmers Home Administration county committee for Blanco Gillespie and Llano counties for three years starting July 1. He succeeds Victor A. Wendel joined by Richard T. Laurence and Otto W. Schumann, local FHA credits and technical assistance to farm families in the region.

Gillespie County Soil Conservation District News

The Gillespie County Soil Conservation District notes summer legume cover crops such as peas and Hubbam clover grown by farmers like David Beyer east of Fredericksburg. Beyer uses a chisel plow and straw mulch to improve water penetration and reduce erosion. District plans include field terraces, Hill Country Association meeting in Boerne on July 30, and a July 31 meeting for former supervisors at the Agriculture Building. Youth conservation books will be distributed to 4-H and scouts. Charles Schmidt increases range deferment during summer rains to build pastures and improve winter forage with equal-divided pastures and watering facilities. District cooperators Brand Feller Otto Staudt and Robert Zenner work on Diversion projects near White Oak.
