The Harper Lions Club sponsors the 19th annual Frontier Day Junior Rodeo at Harper Community Park on April 24 1976. Events run 4 to 9 pm with youth contests to age 18, calf scramble, barrel racing, and roping. Entry fees range from 1 to 5 dollars. silver buckles for seniors and trophies for top placings.
A Western dance follows the rodeo at Frontier Day with Western Stars from San Antonio providing music. Admission for rodeo performances is $1.50 for adults and $1.00 for children, with events for junior and senior classes. Entry blanks available at Bode Feed & Warehouse Store in Harper.
Cyrus H. Schmidt, former Harper High School student, named Outstanding Deputy Marshal of 1975 at a luncheon hosted by the A V Association attended by 300 judges and attorneys. He previously served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and later the Los Angeles Marshal's Department. He and his wife Dorothy live in Quartz Hill with two sons.
A Saturday April 24 grand opening will celebrate the Texas Hill Sporting Range at the former Tivy dale dance hall 12 miles west of Fredericksburg on FM2093. Norbert Fritz says preparations are complete for a day of flag-raising, Schuetzenkoenig shooting, free dances, food and prizes totaling about a thousand dollars. The event features Felix Pehl’s German Oompah Band and Diane Roberts and The Leisuremen for evening dancing with free admission to grounds and pavilion. Prizes include a .22-250 sport rifle and art works.
Absentee voting for the Democratic and Republican primaries runs April 12 through April 27 at the County Clerk Doris Lange office. Eligible voters unable to attend May 1 can cast ballots by next Tuesday in the county seat. The primary determines key district and state offices ahead of the November general election.
