Danish Immigrant Museum Wins NEA Grant for Folk Arts Study

Elk Horn Iowa based Danish Immigrant Museum received a National Endowment for the Arts grant to study Danish American folk arts across Iowa Nebraska South Dakota and Minnesota from January to April. Folklorist Greg Hansen will lead four state interviews to record cradle crafts and preserve heritage in a Traditions Bearers file open to researchers and the public.

Iowa Climatologist Warns of Snowy Winter and Regional Totals

Iowa Climatologist Paul Waite expects above normal snowfall this winter with a statewide average of 32.5 inches. Regions may see about 25 inches in the south and over 40 inches in northeast Iowa. Harlan police seek ruling on Social Security funds ownership

A three-division petition filed by past and present Harlan Police Department members seeks a declaratory judgment on who owns 73 572.48 in Social Security contributions held in a City trust fund. Former officer Duane Schomer and current officers Merrill Martin Lonnie Wilson and Gary Cole comprise the steering group. The case follows a 1977 Social Security refund order and a city council action creating a Social Security Trust Fund to determine rightful ownership of the remaining 50 percent.

Red Cross Expands Hepatitis Screening for Blood Supply

The Red Cross adds two hepatitis tests to strengthen blood safety. One test has been used for 15 years. the new tests will screen for other forms. Some factors like alcohol Tylenol and vigorous exercise may cause false positives, with results monitored and donors questioned about recent alcohol use.

Shelby County farmland value drops for fifth straight year

The annual Iowa State University survey shows Shelby County farmland at 725 per acre, down 110 from last year, a 13.2 percent drop. Statewide values fell to 786 per acre from 948, a 17 percent decline, continuing a long trend with Iowa land prices falling since 1981.

Social Security in Shelby County pays 1.219 million monthly

The Social Security office in Carroll reports Shelby County residents receive 1.219 million dollars in monthly benefits to 2,888 beneficiaries including 1,727 retired workers and 94 disabled workers. Another 441 are spouses of retirees or disabled workers, with 479 widows and dependents. Clark urges checks of W-2 forms and SS cards to ensure correct earnings records.

Student teacher impressed by school and community

Jeff Thoms finished an eight week internship at Harlan Community High School last week and earned a bachelor’s in agricultural education at Iowa State University on Saturday December 20. He praised the community for caring about schools, noted the supportive faculty, and highlighted the HCHS FFA chapter and the chance to work with statistics at football games.
