Public meeting on school district merger plan
A 7 p.m. Friday meeting at Kirkman Community Hall will discuss the Irwin-Kirkman and Manilla boards recent joint decision. On December 15 the boards directed administrators to plan combining and alternating the high and middle schools for 1987-88 and 1988-89 under a two year agreement, inviting all interested parties.

PORTSMOUTH The Iowa Western League marked its 40th anniversary with a Friday night benefit that netted $5,000 for Little League programs across IWL communities. An auction of 40 baseballs, including six autographed by pro players, brought in $1,870. 500 tickets were sold for the Portsmouth Community Hall dance, with 340 attendees despite foggy conditions.

Southwest Iowa Honor Band heads to Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas
Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band, 250 students from six districts, boarded buses Dec 30 for the 1987 Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas after auditions in Griswold May 17-19. The group will perform two selections and a blues medley, with chaperones and a three hour parade rehearsal. The Texas A&M vs Ohio State game follows the parade, with a return planned for 7:30 a.m. Friday January 2.

Beginning January 1 1987 Iowa enforces a mandatory use of safety belts for drivers and front seat passengers on roadways. A six month grace period July 1 to December 31 1986 allowed warnings only. 30 808 warning tickets were issued July 1 through October 31 1986.

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 282 productive pints from 300 in the door at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Harlan on Friday December 26. Donors topped the goal of 225 with extra beds and a revised appointment system aiding flow. Standouts earned gallon pins for high totals while first time donors joined veterans in supplying platelets and whole blood for regional hospitals.

Shelby County Cattlemen's Association announces its annual winter banquet for Monday January 12 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Harlan.
