Public meeting on school district merger plan

A 7 p.m. Friday meeting at Kirkman Community Hall will discuss the Irwin-Kirkman and Manilla boards recent joint decision. On December 15 the boards directed administrators to plan combining and alternating the high and middle schools for 1987-88 and 1988-89 under a two year agreement, inviting all interested parties.

Harlan Municipal Utilities board of trustees will meet at 4 30 p m Friday Jan 2 in the HMU board room. Items include election of chairman and vice chairman for 1987 approval to refund meter correction restricted funds and approval to establish capital improvement funds. Public welcome.

Avoca Bank Taken Over by Local Investor Group

Avoca Citizens Savings Bank in Avoca is purchased by a group of area investors. The bank name and staff are retained. Terry Carley serves as board chairman with H A Lohafer and Ronald Knutson as directors. Robert Darrah of Council Bluffs is interim president and Gary Woods of Missouri Valley is CEO. Dennis Gray and Mary Jo Gray of Council Bluffs also direct, with Jerry Busick and Larry Peterson in key posts.

Dance and auction raise five thousand for Little League

PORTSMOUTH The Iowa Western League marked its 40th anniversary with a Friday night benefit that netted $5,000 for Little League programs across IWL communities. An auction of 40 baseballs, including six autographed by pro players, brought in $1,870. 500 tickets were sold for the Portsmouth Community Hall dance, with 340 attendees despite foggy conditions.

Southwest Iowa Honor Band heads to Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas

Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band, 250 students from six districts, boarded buses Dec 30 for the 1987 Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas after auditions in Griswold May 17-19. The group will perform two selections and a blues medley, with chaperones and a three hour parade rehearsal. The Texas A&M vs Ohio State game follows the parade, with a return planned for 7:30 a.m. Friday January 2.

Iowa seat belt law takes effect. warnings end Jan 1

Beginning January 1 1987 Iowa enforces a mandatory use of safety belts for drivers and front seat passengers on roadways. A six month grace period July 1 to December 31 1986 allowed warnings only. 30 808 warning tickets were issued July 1 through October 31 1986.

Celebrate with care urged for New Year partygoers

Cathy Furness of MIADAC urges holiday partiers to celebrate with care during the season. The statewide Celebrate with Care campaign, led by Iowa health authorities, promotes abstinence support and safer drinking. Furness, a Denison resident working across Shelby Crawford and Monona counties, has two years with MIADAC and conducts school programs and seminars.

Bloodmobile nets 282 productive pints in Harlan drive

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile collected 282 productive pints from 300 in the door at Veterans Memorial Auditorium Harlan on Friday December 26. Donors topped the goal of 225 with extra beds and a revised appointment system aiding flow. Standouts earned gallon pins for high totals while first time donors joined veterans in supplying platelets and whole blood for regional hospitals.

Shelby County Cattlemen Plan Winter Banquet

Shelby County Cattlemen's Association announces its annual winter banquet for Monday January 12 at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Harlan. Prime rib dinners start at 7 p.m. with guest speaker Gary Thies. Tickets cost 8 dollars in advance and 9 dollars at the door. An auction will raise funds with ten beef trophies awarded at the county fair.

Larsen Beef developer to address Iowa cattle show seminar

Gary Larsen of Harlan will speak at the 15th annual Iowa Cattlemen's Association and Iowa Cow Belles trade show in Des Moines Jan. 7-9. He will discuss branded beef products as part of a three-day program that includes district beef queens scholarship events, speeches by John Meetz and Johnny Orr, a Hall of Fame induction, and various industry awards.
