New Zealand teens begin six week visits in Harlan

A pair of New Zealand teenagers arrived in Harlan last weekend to start six weeks with Lions Youth through the Ron Pethoud family. Tiffany Kemp is staying with the Pat Kluesner family during the program.

Denison plant plans expansion

Denison the DENISON-Dubuque Packing Co plans expansion of meat packing operations in Denison. The project will add 125 to 150 new jobs, boosting payroll beyond 700 workers. Company president Chuck Stoltz said development help will finance the project.

Social Security Rep to Help Shelby County Residents Today

A Social Security representative will be in the basement of the Shelby County Courthouse from 9:30 a.m. to noon offering help on Social Security Medicare and Supplemental Security Income and assisting with claims. Shelby Tennant teachers and the school board meet in ongoing negotiations over 1987 88 salaries with a mediator expected this week. The union seeks 14800 base plus MA plus 12 and graduate credit gains, while the board offers 13950 base with no extras. Enrollment decline limits state aid growth, but two percent minimum growth is anticipated.

Christmas programs and school leadership updates approved

The Loess Hills Area XIII Education Agency district voted to join a summer curriculum-writing project with other districts. It approved the 1985 86 audit and, per the auditor’s recommendation, boosted bond coverage for secretary Nancy Collins and treasurer Jeff Fecht. The board reviewed student requirements policy, conducted a six month superintendent evaluation, and planned to send all members to the second annual super board meeting in Council Bluffs on Dec 11. Four Shelby Tennant High School students were chosen for the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band, which will perform in the Cotton Bowl Parade in Dallas on New Year’s Day. Students Jason Bargenquast, Mary McCracken, Galen Barrett, and Gina Rau will depart Dec 30 and return Jan 2.

Harlan Kiwanis Club will run its quarterly paper drive on Saturday December 20. Collectors should place newspapers at curb by 10 a.m. The club earns about $20 per ton with typical loads around 18 tons.

Adoption requests near record for Harlan Christmas aid

The Harlan Newspapers sponsored 31st annual Christmas adoption list shows 101 requests by 10 a.m. Monday with 56 families aided. last year’s record was 110 requests. Donors continue accepting calls at the West Central office. The 1984 peak was 80 more than current year.

Fund drive launched for Manilla fire victims

A fire relief fund is set up in Harlan for Gary and Tammy Muhlbauer and their three children after a December 3 basement fire in their Manilla area home caused extensive damage. Co chairs Faye Jacobsen and Mike Michels urge cash gifts or gift certificates, with deposit boxes at local stores and the chamber office. The family, current residents with relatives, hope to wrap up fundraising by early next week for Christmas assistance.
