Financial aid meeting Thursday night for student aid rules

A college financial aid director will be on hand Thursday night to explain new rules and regulations for student aid forms and answer questions from attendees.

Decoration judges on the streets tonight in Harlan

Harlan Men’s Club members will judge outdoor Christmas decorations in the city’s Christmas Decoration Contest. A six member team starts at 7 30 p.m. with Osman Randy Pash and Dick, Tom Ouren, Terry Cox, Mark Probst and John Helling. Two homes in each of four wards win $10.

City transfer on utility board agenda

Harlan Municipal Utilities plans an annual transfer of surplus funds to the City of Harlan. The HMU board will meet tomorrow at 3 30 p m in the board room to hear Jeanne Frederick of Ehlers and Associates report on possible re bonding of electric revenue bonds. The meeting is open to the public.

Defiance council eyes water deposit hike and hearings

In Defiance last week the council discussed appointing Larry Stessman as assistant chief and Jim Kenkel as second assistant chief. They proposed raising the water service deposit for rental customers from 25 to 50 dollars and set a public hearing for January 6, 1987 at 7 p.m. in City Hall.

I K teachers, board reach $325 base salary pact

IRWIN The teachers association and Supt. Dave Monday settle a contract for 23 teachers raising the base to $13,825 from $13,500. The total package costs the district $17,858, a nearly 5.1 percent increase. The agreement also adjusts upper level pay for each IK teacher.

School teachers reach tentative pay deal after mediator

Dr. Early and Piercea ladder among teachers negotiating a $14,100 base salary with an step on the salary ladder. The school board countered with no wage adjustment. Agreement was reached after a mediator met with both sides Thursday night, December 4. The board plans to address salaries for other school employees in early 1987.

Pair resign from council in Harlan Iowa

Two of the six Harlan City Council seats will be vacant effective next Tuesday December 16 with vacancies to be filled by appointment under Iowa law. Electors may petition to require a special election for the at large vacancy. Other council members include Ken Sojka Vernon Buschkamp Ben Post and Randy Mosher. The meeting also noted resignations at the airport and cemetery boards and discussed upcoming bids and policies.

Christmas Tea Celebrates Danish Christmas at Shelby Society

The Shelby County Historical Society held a Christmas membership tea on Sunday December 7 with Scandinavian flavor and music by Elmer and Frances Jensen of Shelby and the Goodtimers. About 150 attended despite inclement weather as Jane Dinesen received an honorary membership and plaque. Daryl Pedersen chaired decorations and the Danish Christmas scene exhibit. Keith Johnson and the Petersen couple led dining room and kitchen duties with a festive table of Christmas goodies. Photos and more details are promised in the December 13 News-Advertiser.

Irwin Man Wins 10000 In Cold Cash Lottery

Schwiese, 63, of Irwin bought tickets at Harlan Hy-Vee and scratched three dollar signs to win the top prize of 10000 in the Iowa Lottery Cold Cash game. The couple said the top prize is taxed at 25 percent, leaving about 7500 for Edythere and her husband. The win came with surprise remarks from the winner’s wife about the sudden fortune.

Earling mealsite marks ten years with open house

Earling celebrates ten years of the Earling Mealsite a center offering meals companionship and entertainment for area seniors. Grace Gaul has managed the site since 1980 and volunteers deliver meals to those unable to attend a Friday night dance acts and door prizes highlight the open house with meals at 5 p.m. and 6 30 to 8 30 p.m. Reservations are required by 9 a.m. the day of the meal.
