Kiwanis Seeks Donated Band Instruments for Harlan Youth

Harlan Kiwanis Club and Harlan Community Schools launch a drive to supply school band instruments to families unable to rent. Donors can obtain a tax deductible receipt. an additional $100 may sponsor a student or cover repair costs. Contact Nielsen at 755-3395 for more details.

John Jacobsen Wins $100 Prize in Harlan Giveaway

John Jacobsen of Harlan won $100 in the Harlan Holiday Giveaway after registering at Mickel's Restaurant. The Thanksgiving shift moved the Thursday drawing to Friday. Jacobsen claimed the prize while not in a participating store, so future $100 prizes are planned for Dec. 4 11 and 18 with weekly store registrations required.

Adoption list grows as holiday appeal begins in Harlan

Eleven new adoption requests were logged by mid afternoon on Monday as the 31st annual program opened at West Central Development Corporation in Harlan. The drive has helped 1,391 families since 1956 with 110 requests expected this year, while a separate crash near Defiance on U.S. 59 left two drivers hospitalized in serious and no major injuries reported.

AEA program aids parents of disabled children in Shelby County

A Shelby County boy is evaluated at Loess Hills AEA XIII for developmental delays and needs. An Iowa Legislature grant funds parent assistance, linking educators and parents to share information on disability, Legislation, and services. A parent support group forms in Harlan with 24 attendees. Shared goal is partnership among schools, parents, and AEA to help families access resources. A follow-up meeting and speaker on community services planned.

Danish Villages Christmas Festival Lights Elk Horn Shops

Shoppers wandered through 16 Elk Horn and Kimballton Danish Villages during the Julefest 86 weekend. The Windmill Gift Shop offered a Scandinavian Christmas setting with glogg and Danish cheese as Santa Claus greeted visitors on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
