Hardin County Girls Basketball Tournament results

The Hardin County Girls Basketball Tournament was held last Saturday with Whitten defeating Radcliffe 12 9 and 16 5 over Buckeye and Whitten beating Eldora. Steam boat Rock topped Hubbard 16 11 while New Providence beat Owasa 18 11 and Iowa Falls crushed New Providence 20 3. Iowa Falls then beat Whitten 24 18 to win the tourney as a large crowd watched. Referee James James of Des Moines and a new scoreboard by L G Hersey impressed the gym.

Desperado from Ackley taints Iowa towns with terror

Desperado Frank Carter, once living in Ackley and claimed by Geo Althouse editor of the Ackley World-Journal, terrorized Omaha and Council Bluffs. He boasted ties to Ackley, having won at Ackley and stayed there three weeks ago, knew several residents, but Ackley does not want to claim him.

Training School Wrestlers Shine at Ames Meet

The Training School Mat Team placed strongly at the State High School Wrestling Tournament in Ames on February 19 and 20. Seven competitors showed well with five reaching semifinals and three reaching finals, taking one first, two seconds, and two thirds. Victor Michalesky won the 96 lb class, Thomas Wright was second at 85 or 95 lb, Captain Earl Hingst second at 186 lb, Armond Trial third at 115 lb, and James Lucas third at 126 lb. The squad, coached by J H Johnson with assistants, earned the most medals of any team, and the event included Marshalltown and other area towns. Red Cross Nurse Visits Rural and City Schools

Red Cross Nurse Mita Eunico Jones spent last week inspecting in New Providence area and 200 rural schools. Inspections finished in Union Radcliffe Hubbard Whitten and Steam Boat Rock with Eldora and 90 more rural schools remaining. Follow-up visits planned later this year to check corrections and improvements.

The February term district court in Eldora heard multiple criminal cases. Cameron's prosecutions led to three guilty verdicts while others faced sentences pending next week. The town mourns Rev J E Crazan who served the American Sunday School Missionary Society and organized many Sunday Schools. He leaves a widow and one son Raymond of Charleston, W Va. Funeral at the Methodist church Friday at 1:80 with local services at 3:45 and burial in Eldora cemetery.

Income tax returns soon in county schedule

A deputy collector will visit Hubbard City Hall March 2 Eldora March 3 and 4 Ackley March 6 Iowa Falls March 11 and 12 to assist with income tax reports. No charge. Returns for 1926 due March 1, 1926. Penalties up to 10,000 dollars or one year imprisonment plus 26 percent tax for willful failure. Changes under Revenue Act of 1926 include higher filing thresholds and exemptions, and a 1 percent tax rate on line 14.
