Wellsburg Triumph and Eldora Losses in Weekend Games

Wellsburg defeated Eldora 6 to 4 amid costly errors and strong hitting led by Jones and Heckt relief pitching. Eldora lost 1–0 to Mason City in Sheffield with Howden on the mound and 6–0 in a second game as Wambley pitched for Eldora.

Death of John D. Conger Eldora resident aged 88

John D. Conger died in Sacramento California at age 88 after living in Eldora since 1865. Born in Illinois in 1836 he joined the Twelfth Iowa Infantry in 1861 and served over four years. He is survived by his widow and four sons Fred Marty Culls John and Max. Burial occurred in Sacramento.

Mitchell Makes His Get Away

Thomas Mitchell, bound over by the grand jury for breaking and entering at New Providence, escaped from the county jail Saturday night between 8:30 and 9:00. A jail search found three hack saw blades and a file after he fled through a north window. Sheriff Luglan issued 1500 notices with pictures. Mitchell, once a Waterloo cobbler, had wife and three children and prior run-ins with the law. The escape prompted calls for jail overhaul and further manhunts.

New Bridge Planned Over Beaver Creek South of El Dora

A new bridge will be built over Beaver Creek south of El Dora on the road toward the Country Club grounds. The old bridge was washed out in the big storm and has not yet been replaced. The project promises a fine structure once completed.

Peter Foatball of Ellendale Minnesota reclaimed the Ford coupe towed from Steamboat Rock after Sheriff Luglan completed the necessary papers. The owner collected the vehicle on Tuesday return trip.

Death of Mrs Hoffman at 76 in Hyckeya area

Mrs Bertha Hoffman aged 76 died yesterday at her son Ernest’s home near Hyckeya. Burial will be Friday from the Lutheran church here conducted by Rev. Treskow.

Severe Auto Crash Near Ackley Injures Union Woman

Mrs Judy Cordle of Union is hospitalized in Iowa Falls with fatal injuries feared after an automobile collision near Ackley Sunday night. Several others in the car were bruised but not seriously hurt. A unnamed man in a second car is said to have been intoxicated and is under arrest. The Peterson party including A P Peterson and Ed Cardle were returning from Dike to Iowa Falls to drop Elizabeth Cardle at summer school before the crash.

Gete Caught in Motor at Herald Office

Kenneth Boylan was severely injured yesterday when his hand was caught between the wheel and the motor pulley at the Herald office. The fingers of his right hand were scraped but no bones were broken. he will be laid up for some time.

Plans for Park Area and Conservation Board Work

Two state officials met in Vidora with the state architect to outline plans for a new bath house boat house piers and shelters at a growing park and lake area. With a new road under construction funds expected next year will allow early development including twelve work crew from a reformatory to beautify grounds under supervision. The board also urged stopping public hair shampooing at the beach to protect water quality. Thousands visited on a hot Sunday enjoying the lake and picnic grounds. Deeds and local transfers listed. Joe Loichty, once a prominent banker in Waters, died recently.

Eldora School approves heating and construction contracts

The Eldora School Board awarded Carstens Bros. of Ackley the heating work for the old high school building at $1064 with upper floors to be ready. H W Sedvert received the general flooring contract at $669 and a plastering yardage basis of $1.50 per square yard. The two contracts total not to exceed the library project. The Library Board let the heating plant installation contract to Stauffer Van Avery for $1125 with Larson Co. at $1160 and Carstens at $1278.

Mrs Skinner Dies at Eldora After Long Illness

Mrs G C Skinner born June 18 1868 Bangor Iowa married to GC Skinner Oct 2 1894 and mother to Evelyn Lloyd. She died Aug 5 1924 at Eldora after a year of illness with survivors including husband daughter sister and three brothers. Funeral services were held at the home and in Bangor with interment at Bangor.
