First Local Baseball Games of Grundy Center Tournament
Grundy Center and Eldora opened the Grundy Center tournament with a split result after a Monday meeting. Grundy Center had defeated Parkersburg in five innings 6 0 on Sunday before rain halted the game. Eldora beat Wellsburg 10 to 0. Also noted is the upcoming Annual Mid-Summer Meeting of the Hardin County Medical Society on August 6 1924 at Radcliffe Iowa with a program of papers and a banquet. Rotary meeting reports include about 75 Hotarians meeting with Eldora Club to hear District Governor Chas Boardman’s report, and Marshalltown visitors Sunday noted.

Man Dies from Overdose on Jefferson Highway
Ray Allum a 46 year old barber from Marengo Iowa was found dying by the roadside near Hubbard. He died Saturday at nine in the morning after suffering heart dilation likely from opiate overdose. Relatives in Marengo identified him and his body was sent to Minneapolis. He left Minneapolis a week earlier walking and taking rides toward Des Moines. He had a wife and four children, sisters and a mother. Coroner Longenecker did not order an inquest as the death was attributed to self administered drugs.

Hail Causes Great Damage South and West of Grundy Center
Severe storm on Sunday evening caused about 85,000 dollars in damage to around forty farms south and west of Grundy Center. Two inches of rain fell in half an hour, damaging corn and washing small grain from fields. Downed trees blocked highways. telephone lines were down. Area stretched about ten miles west and a bit south, one and a half miles wide. Union saw heavy rain but no crop damage.

The Stoddard Co of Mason City arrived with their heavy tractor and large shovel to start work on Pine Lake road. They forded the river to reach the north end, cutting gains in the bank to build an 80 foot wide road. The contract covers a park road extending north beyond the lake and connecting with Steamboat Rock road. The Woods machine once crossed the high bridge and weighs more, but the Stoddard crew chose the river route to extend the work.
