National VJ Day Observed Today

National VJ Day is observed today Sept 2 marking the 15th anniversary of VI Day. El doran Gene Foster appears in a Berlin photo with T Webb of the British army and Elizabeth Smirnova of the Russian army as allies celebrate the end of World War I. Foster served in the European theatre with the 11th Armored Division during the Battle of the Bulge and is now executive secretary of the Hardin County Soldiers Relief Commission.

Plans Announced For Fall Corn Show In Eldora

Preliminary plans for the Eldora fall corn show to run with the three day Eldora Corn Festival in October 2022 were announced by Glen Paul committee chairman. The event features open and junior classes with prizes for five ears, a single ear, and shelled corn. Entries come from the 1960 trap and are limited to two per class, with judging starting Oct. 20.

Engelking Truck Found At Ames As Boys Escape

Ames officials arrested William Birmingham 17 of Randall an Iowa State Training School inmate who escaped Wednesday. He had taken a 1953 Ford pickup owned by E A Engelking of Hubbard. Carl Pelander 17 of Ames also escaped but was returned to the school by Thursday morning. Le Roy Faumal 16 of Iowa Falls remained at large Thursday morning after escaping Wednesday night.

Bramwell Named Bank Board Chair in Eldora Change

Mrs W K Bramwell of Eldora elected chairman of the Hardin County Savings Bank Board of Directors to succeed her late husband W K Bramwell. Keith Strother elected to the board. The active management remains with president R R Brown. The Bramwells retain financial interests and Mrs Bramwell will move to Eldora.

Tower Buys Kunath Building In Eldora Purchase

Amy Tower of Eldora has bought the Dr Norman Kunath building directly north of Bekemeier’s Hardware on Washington Street. The deal, handled by local realtor J D Leonard, plans to move RB & T offices into the basement and occupy the upstairs apartment. Optometry equipment remains on the first floor with hopes it can be rented. The present RB & T offices occupy the basement of the Bateson building.

Northrup King officials plan Eldora seed corn plant opening

Northrup King & Co officials from Minneapolis met Eldora personnel, Chamber of Commerce leaders, and local newspapers to plan the grand opening of the hybrid seed corn drying plant set for Saturday September 17 Allan Hielala led the meeting with Roger Kobes and I R Mahigan also attending along with Ralph Tasa Leonard Evens W L Reagan Roy Atherton George Stauffacher Al Schafer and Troy Jones. Hans Wetzel of Hamburg Germany attended as observer.

Cattle Tour Planned by Harding County Feeder

The 1960 Harding county cattle feeder's tour to South Dakota will run from September 25 to September 30. A complete schedule of events will be published in next week's Eldora Newspaper.

Mrs Brandt 41 Buried At Hubbard

Funeral services were held for Mrs Rudolph Brandt 41 of Hubbard who died Saturday after a five year illness. She is survived by Rudolph Brandt her husband her parents two brothers a sister and fifteen nieces and nephews. Burial was in Hubbard Cemetery.

Funeral services for Ella Martha Meier 64 were held at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Hubbard. She was born January 31 1896 in Sherman township and died Friday. Burial was in Hubbard Cemetery. Survivors include sister Emma and brothers Henry Will and Charles.

A district court petition filed this week by Home Insurance Co of New York seeks a $67.17 judgment on a promissory note against Deane Johnson. Stricklerm Bellizzi and Rosenberg of Des Moines represent the plaintiff.

Eldora Airfield Seeks 1000 Foot Runway Expansion

Thunderbird Flying Club announced options signed by the Steinfeldt estate to extend Eldora’s runway from 2000 to 3000 feet. The city will acquire five acres north of the current strip from the Steinfeldt estate, then trade five acres of Clark Norman land west of the airfield to finalize the deal with a $1000 premium. City possession begins after harvest removal. Thunderbird will oversee grading, lighting, fencing removal, and seeding with seed paid by Eldora. Work could start late fall or next spring, aided by state funding sharing half the costs. The 124 acre field dates to 1956 with dedication in 1957. Thunderbird has ~150 members from several nearby towns. Keith Hogle is president. Troy Jones is membership chairman.

Psychology Convention Heads for Chicago Meeting

Mr and Mrs James Allen of Eldora depart for the American Psychological Association convention in Chicago from September 1 to 7. Allen is a psychologist with the mental health team at the Iowa State Training School for Boys in Eldora. The convention will discuss the newest psychological methods.

Tractor Pull at Owasa on Labor Day 1960

A mid Iowa tractor traction contest planned for Labor Day, Sept. 5 in Owasa crowns central Iowa champions. Four weight classes from up to 5,000 to 12,500 pounds, with $150 in prize money and a following plowing demonstration. Dealers barred from pulling but will exhibit equipment. Weigh-ins run until noon Sept. 5.

Extended Telephone Service To Hubbard Forecast For 1961

Eldora and Hubbard discuss extending area telephone service with Central Iowa Telephone Co to offer dial free service next year. A study will precede a formal request, with three to four new lines needed between Hubbard and Eldora. Hubbard serves 700 patrons, Eldora 1700, and service would cover Radcliffe Garden City Buckeye.

Eldora Chamber of Commerce urges area shops to stay closed on Labor Day. The post office will have no delivery or window service, with a 3:30 PM dispatch. Hardin County Courthouse also closes Monday. Three locals traveled to Detroit Wednesday to view a 1961 Oldsmobile and return Friday.

Two Injured In Car Crash Monday

Nora Lancaster aged 75 of Steamboat Rock and John Essig aged 18 of Eldora were hurt in a two car crash at the east edge of the high bridge Monday at 6 20 p m Both suffered cuts bruises and rib fractures for Lancaster. They received treatment at Eldora hospital. Essig drove a 1954 Chevrolet while Lancaster’s car was a 1939 Hudson both wrecked when Lancaster attempted a turn into the Essig vehicle.

Airfield expands water supply and flight operations

Completion of a well at the airfield provides water for public use and firefighting. A four plane hangar was built by Clark Norman. Parts of the hangar are rented to Smith Flying Service, commercial sprayers and dusters, and BOWS Inc. Private hangars belong to Carroll Hobson, Norman, Corwin Hadley, Russell Gast, and Floyd Van Tiger. Local residents train as pilots and the Thunderbird Flying Club owns a training airplane.
