Haapala Expands Eldora Seed Plant With New Buildings
Haapala Seed Garden begins expansion at Eldora on the west edge, adding two buildings for shelling equipment and partial processing with a four-bin elevator for loading shelled corn into trucks. The project follows last year’s opening of an 80 by 57 drying plant with 100000 bushels per season capacity. Eldora hopes for further growth if current trends continue.

Indian Corn Contest Prizes Announced
Eldora merchants sponsor prizes for the October Corn Festival with a $2 award for the longest car entry and a second prize of 1ft to the second longest. The Chamber of Commerce will pay $6 for a five ear display and $2 for a single unusual ear. Olsen Sporting Goods awards the grand championship trophy for the longest car. Forty youths may compete for five awards with judging to be announced. Local committee members include Jon Starr Floyd Allen Halger Olsen and Frank Monaghen.

Eldora schools start Monday with 43 instructors and an expected enrollment of 865, up from 850 last year. Classes begin at 8:40 am with noon lunches served first day. Debating returns under Claflin Von Yeast, while new library facilities and updated visual aids debut under librarian Harold Eckes.

Eldora residents will vote September 12 to fill three-year terms on the Eldora Board of Education. Wm N Dunn and Keith M Strother announce candidacies with nomination papers due by September 2. Strother, bank vice president and community volunteer, and Dunn, Hardin County Attorney, would join veterans Harold Wehrman and Jurgen Traden who are running. incumbents Ed Clary Irvin Cakerice and Charles Nichols hold terms not expiring until 1961 or 1962. The election shifts from March to September under new law to gain experience before major staffing and budget decisions.

Television Award For Baby Sitting
Margaret McGrane a 12 year old from near Steamboat Rock received a television award from KWWL Waterloo for faithful baby sitting. Her father works for Lee Lundy and she recently cared for seven siblings while her mother was in Iowa City giving birth. The family with children ages six weeks to 14 years was invited to appear on the Captain Bob show where a bicycle prize was promised. Margaret will attend Steamboat Rock school this fall.
